------------------------------------------------

Steve liked the fresh air, he hadn't got a chance to enjoy it in Wakanda, hadn't got a chance to do much except what had been done. Then like the dust in his hands it had all slipped away, reality and earth did as well. At first he'd been alone, he'd had time to explore everything by himself, had slept and eaten and there had been days of that kind of echoing quiet. It gave him time to think, this hadn't been part of his plan. He'd cleared out a house, put together a tool kit from things he'd found around. The tools had needed some care but worked well for his basic needs.

Once he'd seen to cleaning, washing windows inside and out, then it was building up firewood. Steve must have spent an entire day taking apart dead trees, carrying the stores into the square. It was good, he didn't think too much then, just that it might get cold, there might be more people.

And there were more people, strangers who appeared much the same as he had and Steve tried to give them space, be welcoming and yet not threatening. He wasn't sure how well it was working. But he'd decided that usually the best way to make peace and the like was through someone's stomach. Which is what had lead him to taking a little walk down to where the trees got closer together and twigs cracked under foot.

He never wanted to kill something, but he also understood foodchains and the like. The large boar hadn't stood much chance against the impact of his shield and it was quick at least. The rest of it took longer and Steve didn't have a lot of experience but it wasn't the first time he'd butchered something so he got there. Steve carried it back to the square, where he'd already lit the fire under the metal rack he'd dragged out from behind a shed was scrubbed clean. A spit would be better, but that kind of machinery wasn't his forte. Coals and what looked to be an old metal gate would do fine.

It was practically a barbecue.

"What did what happen?" She tilted her head and raised an eyebrow, leaning against the tree she had just been hiding behind. "How did we get here?" She made a face and shrugged. "No one seems to really know, but I've heard the name Thanos tossed around here and there." Kate only had a vague familiarity with the name, but if what people were saying was true...

She pushed it from her mind for the moment. "Or if you're asking how we," she pointed from herself to him, "happened, that's a longer story." She looked at him, wondering if it was the time to tell it.

"Have you always been an Avenger? Was there ever a time you decided you didn't want to be one anymore?"

"The latter, how I ended up taking you on. I was SHIELD before I was an Avenger and Laura convinced me to retire, which given recent events is something I supported. Did she convince me to leave in your world too?" he asked curiously, not considering for even a moment that there wasn't a Laura he was married too.

"I'd still like to learn our story though. Or I suppose your story since you have a distinct advantage over me," he added tiling his head to study her. She didn't seem intimidating or dangerous but that didn't mean a thing in his line of work. He figured he'd still take her out first though given she didn't seem to be armed.

Kate couldn't help but snort when he told her that he was married and glanced at him, realizing that this version of Clint might actually be happily married. She coughed, knowing it was too late to cover it up. "Sorry," she said, awkwardly rubbing the back of her neck. "Uh, you're not really the settling down type. Well, you were, but it..." She realized she was probably telling more of her Clint's life then was comfortable, even if it was...with himself?

She shook her head. "You didn't retire, you left the Avengers. And kinda went ninja?" She thought about his time as Ronin and how she had taken over the title of Hawkeye. "A couple of people left the Avengers actually. So we started a new one." She smiled, thinking about her friends. "You challenged me, I lost, but you still advocated for us." She glanced at him, wondering if he would trust her.

"I can show you something you taught me." She held out her hand, not really expecting him to willingly give her his bow.

Clint got a bad feeling in the pit of his stomach at her reaction to the news that he was married. While he and Laura had some problems, he had hoped that they had worked past them especially with his desire to retire. "Laura leaves me in your world?" he asked before shaking his head.

"I wouldn't do that to her. I guess there's a lot of things different between wherever you come from and my world. Who else left?" he asked curiously.

"Also you must be dreaming if you think you're getting my bow," he replied. "If you know me you know that nobody else gets to touch it."

"Who's Laura?" Well, that should answer his question. "Yeah, I can see that." It was a bit upsetting to have a Clint not trust her and seem completely different than the one she knew.

"A whole bunch," was all she said to his question. Because it was true. "I mean, sounds like you didn't want to fight to save the world for the rest of your life. Can you blame anyone?" It was back-breaking work and she was only in her early 20s.

Another snort, but she held her hands up in defeat. "Fine, I'll just have to show you another time then." She walked towards him, stopping when she was about to pass him. She glanced up at him, recognizing small things here and there, but it really was a stranger standing in front of her. "I guess I don't really know you. But I'd like to." She pointed to one of the buildings to her right.

"I'm the one with the purple door. If you ever feel like talking."

"She's my wife. I wasn't with her in your world?" he asked curious. He couldn't imagine not being married to her. He wanted to save their marriage and he'd do anything for it which is why he quit.

"I get that, it's exhausting work," he agreed.

"Thanks, I do look forward to getting to know you so I guess I'll see you around?"
