Steve liked the fresh air, he hadn't got a chance to enjoy it in Wakanda, hadn't got a chance to do much except what had been done. Then like the dust in his hands it had all slipped away, reality and earth did as well. At first he'd been alone, he'd had time to explore everything by himself, had slept and eaten and there had been days of that kind of echoing quiet. It gave him time to think, this hadn't been part of his plan. He'd cleared out a house, put together a tool kit from things he'd found around. The tools had needed some care but worked well for his basic needs.

Once he'd seen to cleaning, washing windows inside and out, then it was building up firewood. Steve must have spent an entire day taking apart dead trees, carrying the stores into the square. It was good, he didn't think too much then, just that it might get cold, there might be more people.

And there were more people, strangers who appeared much the same as he had and Steve tried to give them space, be welcoming and yet not threatening. He wasn't sure how well it was working. But he'd decided that usually the best way to make peace and the like was through someone's stomach. Which is what had lead him to taking a little walk down to where the trees got closer together and twigs cracked under foot.

He never wanted to kill something, but he also understood foodchains and the like. The large boar hadn't stood much chance against the impact of his shield and it was quick at least. The rest of it took longer and Steve didn't have a lot of experience but it wasn't the first time he'd butchered something so he got there. Steve carried it back to the square, where he'd already lit the fire under the metal rack he'd dragged out from behind a shed was scrubbed clean. A spit would be better, but that kind of machinery wasn't his forte. Coals and what looked to be an old metal gate would do fine.

It was practically a barbecue.

"Oh, yeah, we lost big time," Tony was, apparently, just not good at delivering news gently. Then again, it wasn't like Pete didn't know. Usually, it was pretty obvious things were going to absolute shit when you were turning to dust. "But it wasn't your fault. You did more than fine--hey. Hey. Don't do that. Don't think about it." Tony had done more than enough thinking about it for the both of them -- not that Peter had much of a choice in the matter, but he wasn't sure how to shield the kid from something he'd already lived through. Maybe being obtuse was just the best...angle.

Strange might have had an all knowing and wise thing going on, but Tony was genuinely starting to doubt the decisions they'd all made there. Not one had said anything about a weird not-Town in the middle of Confusion, for one thing.

"What?" He asked, genuinely surprised at the question, although he didn't know why. Peter was that kind of kid. He cared. He was good. "I'm good. I'm great." Except the part where he'd nearly died of dehydration and oxygen deprivation on a space ship while everyone he knew and loved was probably dust. Except -- well. Here Peter was. "No. I'm not dead. And you're not dead. And this isn't the afterlife. At least, it'd better not be. That's not even wi-fi. Anyway -- Captain America is here, so. You know him." He was rambling. He sort of wanted to hug Peter again. Was that normal? There'd been a point when he'd been very opposed. Just opening a car door, and all that. But now he felt rather over emotional about everything. "I was on a space ship. I think it possibly hit a crack in space and or time. Ended up here."

Peter nodded, "You guys cool or whatever?" He was sure that being trapped together in a place like this would only get them fighting again or bring them closer as friends. He had to admit that he hoped for the latter. He'd walked away bruised from his last fight with Cap but he would fight him again if Tony asked him to, but he'd grown up like most kids he knew, looking up to the Avengers. He was that kid who ran around in an iron man mask and had been thrilled when the neighbor boy would use a trash can lid like a shield and they would play avengers together, Tony and Cap were supposed to be best friends. Peter had grown up a bit, understood that friendships could have nuance and all that other stuff they talked about in his literature classes, but deep down he still believed they should get along. Now he also believed it because he was fairly certain Tony needed it after everything they'd been through.

And really, in a place with no wi-fi, having friends around might be the only thing keeping a person from going insane.

"Space ship." It was still hard to get over the fact that he'd been on an alien spaceship and out in space. He hadn't had the time to geek out about it while they were fighting Thanos, and doing it now might have stirred up unpleasant memories for the both of them so he tried to let it go. "I guess it isn't working anymore? Did you crash?"

No, they weren't really cool or whatever. But they weren't fighting either, and apparently Tony had been willing enough to take up Steve's offer of a clean house so ---

They were something. Punches probably wouldn't be thrown. It was good enough. For now.

Tony shrugged, because he wasn't about to explain all his weird rollercoaster feelings about Steve Rogers to Peter who --

Well. Jesus. It was still shocking he was here. Alive. In front of him. He had to bite his lower lip in order to not just hug the kid all over again. There was no promise that it still wasn't going to happen again later. Soon.

"I kinda crashed," he admitted. "But it wasn't a -- well. Yeah. It wasn't the best landing. It wasn't really working as it was up there. We can salvage the parts for some tech here though. This place is disturbingly lacking in power." He paused, considering his next words because -- well. Just because, maybe. "You up to the task?"

Tony didn't want it to feel like he was recruiting Peter for anything, because he'd done enough of that and it had ended horrifically. But he did want the kid around. Close. It was important.
