Who: Losers et al. But basically anyone can show up, lbh
What: Partying in Tozier Style
Where: The Losers House
When: Dec 25th

The halls were decked. Balls were out. Whatever. Richie had tried decorating to his best ability, which had been slightly hampered by his lack of know how — years and years as a live-alone bachelor didn’t tend to make a guy decorate his house much — and by the lack of a general store in which to get decorations. Still, those doors had come in clutch, for the most part. There was a little fake tree (and some presents underneath, even!) and plenty of strung up lights and Richie had made sure to put mistletoe in literally every doorway because he was a chaotic monster on a goddamned mission, okay.

As promised there were drinks. And snacks. And chicken tenders (well made by Beverly) and Mac and Cheese (not quite as well made by Richie, but he’d tried and therefore no one could criticize him) and some other holiday stuff.

But the dance party was the appeal here and Richie, with his absurd amount of records and even more now that he’d gotten some for Christmas, was fucking ready with a stack curated specifically for the holiday. And, of course, with Stan in mind too.

Christmas in Hollis was blaring, he somehow had two drinks in hand, and Rich was fucking ready for whatever the night was going to bring.

Cute.

Beverly was worried, of course - she didn't think that the shadows lurking would just go away; they were there, watching and waiting. And while she was tempted to ask Richie if Eddie knew about the nightmares he no doubt experienced, as a result of being trapped in the lights (you'll float too) - the visions happened in pictures, like slides in Bill's old projector and maybe you were screaming, a raw and primal noise in your head but there's a weight that pins you down - she didn't.

Because this was a Christmas party Richie had organized and she didn't want to ruin it for him. So instead she asked, "When are the wedding bells then, hm?" as she knocked ashes off her cigarette.

No, the shadows most definitely didn't just go away. They sat there and waited, weighing heavily on Richie's broad shoulders, sometimes at the worst of times. The Deadlights were only half of it, which was -- wildly fucked. There'd always be just one more thing to worry about, at least. And Richie did plenty of worrying and probably not enough sleeping -- but he wasn't really one to let on to that sort of shit in the light of day. If he wasn't there and making jokes about everything and nothing, who would be?

But today wasn't a day for those things. Richie was intent on making a full night of this party. A really fucking good night.

"What?" He asked, feigning shock, eyebrows raising up high. "It's only been like. Two months. Jesus. Don't rush me." But that didn't stop him from sticking his cigarette in his mouth, glancing around a little bit like he was trying to make sure he wasn't being watched by anyone but Beverly and then digging into his pocket for the little box that was quite possibly literally burning a hole in his pocket and had been for a few weeks now. "I'm literally dying about this, Marsh. Please let me show off."

Oh, now, what was this? Beverly watched carefully, exhaling another stream of smoke, the dead end of her cigarette dropped and snuffed with a twist of one of those needlepoint high heels. She'd received a bow and arrows from her Secret Santa, so she was ready for some weapons lessons, but she could still use her shoes if need be.

"Richie - " It was a squee of a sound, an emotional response, a warm tingle that tickled in her toes all the way up, even reaching each strand of ginger hair until it seemed to giggle out of her, like confetti at a party. And Beverly wasn't much of a giggler, let it be known. But she was happy for him - maybe it had only been a couple months here, but those two had loved each other for years and years.

She threw her arms around him in a hug. "Let me see it! Where did you get it?!"

That! That was the kind of response that Richie had sort of been hoping for because it was so giddy and pleased that it made Richie go giddy and pleased too, until he was letting out this nervous whoosh of a laugh and hugging her back, cigarette carefully held away from the both of them.

"Through the doors!" He said, popping the box open in a way that was wildly smooth -- a way, he knew, he wouldn't be doing when it came down to asking. No, then he was pretty sure he'd have shaky hands and wobbly everything and probably drop the damn thing. But for now, he was cool. It was a tension set little diamond in a band of gold, a sappy engraved set of their initials on the inside. Not too flashy, but definitely better than just a band, he'd figured. After a lot of deliberation and freaking out. "I said I was off to get those stupid Ugly Sweaters and Eddie and Stan yelled at me for being stupid until they were blue in the face. Totally worth it."

Beverly examined the ring with an ooooh, taking the box and giving the bauble a look over. Much nicer than a simple band of gold - it wasn't too gangsta blingy either, because that could be a little much. Sinking to the bottom of the ocean while wearing your wedding ring was not a goal.

"Of course they yelled at you, the idiots," she snorted a laugh, then snapped the box closed and gave it back to Richie. He'd want to keep it, for later. For the perfect time to propose, whenever that would be. In this universe, there weren't ex-wives or divorces to worry about - they could probably just...get it done?

It was such a good thing. As someone who was unhappily married, saying vows with someone who was far too much like her shitty father, she knew how much she longed for something that wasn't perpetuating the cycle of abuse. Eddie deserved that, deserved someone who wouldn't stamp out the bravery and drive in him. "Want me to be your best man?" she asked coyly. "I will throw you one hell of a bachelor party."

"Right?" Richie asked, with a grin even as he put the box back in his pocket to let the burning resume there. "Richie, if you die out there, I'll fucking kill you. What the fuck's wrong with you?" Whatever. He'd been a man on a mission and hadn't been able to wait, no matter what horrors he'd run into beyond those doors before. Some things felt worth it. This had been one of those things.

Richie, obviously, had never been married before. Hadn't been able to get past his own self loathing to even really bother with dating before now. But here they were. And he thought he'd be pretty good at it. He wasn't out to change Eddie so much as he was to encourage him as best he could. And to get him into those obscene little shorts a bit more often, maybe. The point was, he'd never fucking hurt Eddie. He wasn't the sort for it and never had been.

"Jesus, Bev," he said, taking one last drag of his smoke before stomping it out with the heel of his shoe and exhaling -- smoke escaping from behind a near crazy grin. "Like there was ever gonna be anyone else? You'd rock a suit better than I ever will. And that's not even starting in on the party."

"I don't know, you look pretty hot with the tie on," she winked, fingers clasping the aforementioned neck noose and giving it a little tug. "You'll look extra hot on your wedding day, I'm sure it." And hey, if the soon-to-be engaged couple also needed fashion tips? Do's and Don'ts for the big day? They'd know who to call. Especially since she lived right there.

Eager to hear more details, Beverly wrapped her arms around herself, rubbing her coat sleeves - just to generate the slightest bit of heat. As Richie was so kind to note earlier, she was short - and small. And got cold easily. "When are you gonna do it? Have anything elaborate planned?"

When her ex proposed, she couldn't recall much romance. It happened at some god-awful hour in the morning, a ring under her pillow, and just - no one wanted to be proposed to before they'd brushed their teeth and with sleep crust in their eyes. She should have taken that complete lack of ingenuity as a sign.

"It's romantic," Richie pointed out of his tie, like it was absolute fact. Which, obviously, it was. Because some tiny version of Eddie had told him so, and Richie still believed it to be true even now that they were grown up again. God, this place was fucking weird. But Richie dug it. "And I dunno. We'll see. I'm like, not planning a wedding over here just yet. I might just wear whatever I wake up in, you never know." Okay, maybe he was a little. Because Richie was no so secretly a sentimental sap who was a lot more sensitive than what he really wanted to let on. But it wasn't like Beverly of all people probably didn't know that.

"Uhhh. No. I -- don't know?" Richie actually looked a little nervous over the thought. "I really don't know. I keep thinking, you know. It's gotta be perfect. The moment's gotta be right but not fabricated or too obvious because he knows okay, and I want it to be a surprise, a little?" If he busted out a bottle of wine and tried romancing Eddie, it just wouldn't work out. Eddie'd be onto him in the hottest of seconds. "Maybe tonight. Maybe tomorrow. New Years? Is that too cliche? Oh my god help me."

Listen, he knew Beverly hadn't had the best time in her marriage. She hadn't been wearing a ring in Derry, and she'd been sporting some bruises that everyone had been too chickenshit to bring up, but had still made Richie want to get out a baseball bat and make it familiar with some asshat's face. But it wasn't like she didn't understand the concept of romance even if she'd not quite found it yet -- of that, he was sure.

Beverly's expression softened, and she wanted to help - because of course she knew that Richie was a romantic deep in the cockles of his heart, and that heart was also a lot more tender than he let on too. So, she'd do her best. And she liked to think she knew a thing or two about a thing or two, when it came to love and romance - despite her extraordinarily bad luck in that arena.

"I think you kind of have to consider your...personalities?" she suggested. "Like, Eddie probably wouldn't want something in front of people and you're not the type to hide the ring in a baked potato at dinner or something. The holidays aren't necessarily cliche, but whatever you do, definitely put a personal touch on it. Incorporate something that's special and important to the both of you."

Maybe Richie could ask while he and Eddie were monopolizing the hammock that she and Stan weren't allowed to touch. It didn't have to be over the top.

"Oh fuck, can you imagine the lecture I'd get for food contamination if I hid the ring in a baked potato? I wouldn't live through the night." Tender or not, Richie and Eddie's love language was fairly unique in the fact that most of the time, it just seemed like they were arguing their way through flirtation. That much, at least, hadn't changed since they were kids.

She had a point though, personality wise. Richie tended to be more interested in making a scene usually -- but in this instance he hadn't really been planning on that. It wasn't something he wanted to make a spectacle of.

"I get what you're saying," he said. "Sorta. I have a feeling I'm just gonna blurt it out like an idiot when I get too nervous. I'm just... tired of waiting." Which felt stupid, because again, it hadn't been all that long. Except it had, too.

The thought of a food contamination lecture made Beverly chuckle. It was so very Eddie. "If you blurt it out, well, no one can fault you," she grinned, patting Richie's arm. "I'd say it's a long time coming." And after so much turmoil, and separation, and the magic and glamour of Derry and the way memories faded away like stars before the sun began to rise, and the way they got them all back - yeah, it was time.

Richie's proposal would come from the heart, that's all she knew - and it would be more than enough.

"I guess we better go back in now though, since if he comes out here he'll yell at you for smoking." And her too. They'd get matching cancer stick lectures.

Sure, it was a long time coming. That and, well. Richie had seen what life without Eddie was like, even for a short time there and he was zero percent interested in seeing it again. Clearly that meant he had to put it on lockdown. It made sense to him anyway. And Beverly didn't seem to disagree, so that was a plus.

"Yeah, no, let's not get yelled at," he agreed -- although surely they'd be out here again later on, probably when one or both of them was drunk and the best thing for it would be another cigarette. Liquor and smoking always seemed to go together best, after all.

"Shots later," he promised as they slipped back inside. "And save a dance for me, will ya?"
