Who: Anyone who wants to have a comfortable but bad time.
What: Some Spoop at the Overlook: Haunted Psychic Hotel of Doom
Where: Sidewinder, Colorado
When: Length of the Halloween Plot.

During the warm summer and spring months, The Overlook Hotel in Sidewinder, Colorado does excellent business: visitors thrive on a wonderful view of the Rocky Mountains while being able to enjoy remote quiet and catered comfort.

In the winter though, the snow is too plentiful and dangerous to allow visitors to come and go freely — and so the Hotel becomes a sleepy quiet place with less than a skeleton staff. The empty halls, fully stocked kitchen and bars and choice pick of rooms should be a delight for anyone who ends up there. But the halls are less empty and quiet than what they might originally appear.

All roads lead to Room 237.

Remus / Sirius

"I don't move in any other way," Sirius said, and yeah, he'd seen Remus' pause, seen the hesitation and the worry there. But it really was just down the hall. They could see that far. It'd be fine. And Remus must have agreed eventually if he actually went with it.

He pressed a kiss to the tip of Remus' nose and then apparated with a crack to the end of the hall, wand out and ready to give a good alohomora to every lock he came up against.

The first few doors had nothing behind them but boring rooms, nothing special.

The third was... different. It had writing across the wall, big. Red. Sirius wasn't really sure it was anything remotely near crayon or paint. His fingers slid off of the doorknob and he stared for a long moment.

What the bloody hell was REDRUM meant to mean, anyhow?

Moving quickly was the only option. Remus didn't want to open any of the doors because Merlin only knew what was on the other side of any of them but he knew that there was no other way. There was also no guarantee that any of them would yield any type of result that they wanted but again -- what choice did they have? What if one of them, even the very first one he tried, was their way back to town? It was certainly not impossible, even if it felt bleak.

The little kiss was a comfort, but when Sirius apparated to the other side of the hall he just felt cold. Remus took a shaky breath to try to calm himself, and focus. He needed to pull it together and just do what needed to be done here. He'd seen worse. He'd been in much worse situations than this. But that was usually alone, and in this case having Sirius with him made the danger factor spike because he feared for him too, no matter how capable of a wizard Sirius Black was.

It wasn't often that Remus tended to show off his wandless skills but in this situation he needed to move as fast as possible. So one by one, he looked at a door, focused, and unlocked it. Nothing. Nothing again. Nothing a third time. But after the third time he hesitated because he hadn't heard any other doors. Sirius had stopped. "Padfoot..?" He turned to look down the hall and saw him staring. "What...?" He hurried down the hall. "What is it..?" He turned to look at the door and he immediately saw exactly what REDRUM was. He was the clever one of the group, after all.

"Oh my god," he whispered. He waved his hand and the letters magically flipped themselves around to spell MURDER. "Did you unlock it?"

It wasn't like Sirius wasn't clever -- but Remus always had been better at puzzles, all while Sirius usually stood around and complained about the design of them before he bothered attempting to figure them out at all. In this instance, it was because he was rather surprised by the sheer amount of blood it might take to write something like that on a wall so largely.

He glanced over at Remus, grey eyes gone solemn, without humor. This hotel was not for them, but it was certainly possible the note was. MURDER. No. He'd been avoiding that, and intended to keep his streak up. "The door?" He asked, quiet. "Yes." He hadn't stepped in. He didn't want to either. But there was also something -- something in him that sort of felt like he ought to, just the same.

Sirius was quite clever. It just came out in a different way, not quite as obvious as Remus' cleverness. But Remus would always attest to how brilliant Sirius Black was in every way. Biased or not, it was the truth. He had no doubt eventually Sirius would've rearranged the letters himself.

Now, the real question was, should they open it? Because they absolutely should not, according to Remus' worries. No, they shouldn't open a door that spelled out the reversed word 'MURDER' in blood. By all accounts that was a terrible idea. Yet at the same time, fighting tooth and nail through his paranoia and fears of what might be on the other side and going through an impossibly high number of horrific scenarios of what they might find -- that tiny voice of reason was shouting at him what if it's the right door? Because something so obviously horrible could very well be the way out, given how twisted this magic of the doors could be.

"I think we have to open it."

They probably shouldn't. Remus looked hesitant which usually meant something was a bad idea. Sirius wasn't feeling great about it either, but it wasn't as if things like this -- mysteries -- didn't usually lead to some kind of answer. Maybe not good ones, but -- well. Sometimes knowing was better than not.

"Not on," he murmured, but flicked his wand at the door anyway, effectively pushing it open.

It was dark in there, and something felt heavy, and it wasn't wise for either of them to be without a hand to defend themselves, so Sirius only pushed himself closer to Remus, until their shoulders were touching, and they stepped in together.

"Lumos," he murmured, pulling up a light.
