Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
Who: Steve and Natasha
What: Very seriously dating
Where: Their house
When: Sunday night

It had been very nerve wracking to ask her and really he hadn't expected her to say yes. But he'd done it and she'd agreed and Steve was totally in love with her because she was special and amazing and have a real mean right hook. So of course he wanted to go steady. That night - like you did when you were practically engaged to be thirteen year old married- Natasha went to sleep under the covers and Steve slept on top, their hands nearly holding, beside each other on the comforter.

When he awoke it was with his face buried in red and blonde hair, the feel of her body slotted easily against his own and his arm possessive around her waist. It took a moment, Steve blinked slowly as he breathed, deep and easy. Which was strange. It hadn't been easy when he'd fallen asleep.

Then came the pajama pants which were up to his knees and the shirt up to his pecs.

And was that his hand on her stomach?

Wait why was he in bed with a woman and where was his best guy?

Steve sat up quick, relieved to see Natasha as things started coming back, the week that had passed, being a kid again and all the silliness that entailed.

Steve knew that he might very well have married her, if it had been then and not now, if everyone had told him how wrong it was. Being with Natasha would have been far better than settling. He'd have been happy in nearly every way except for the fact they weren't in love. But they did love each other, Steve would have taken every bullet for her, laid his life on every line, done anything and everything to make her happy. She'd given up everything for him, followed him out of the country to stay by his side and that kind of loyalty, it didn't come along every day.

"I'd have made a pretty sub par husband," he said with a huff. Of course Steve wouldn't have cheated, he wasn't the sort but he'd still have been gay. "But we'd have still have been best friends."

They leaned their heads together and Steve sighed. He'd been sure he'd never get this again, never feel the warmth of her, hear her voice or make her laugh. This place had given him more than he'd ever dreamed. Steve breathed deep, enjoying the sensation and flexed the muscles in his arm that was around her, yeah it was good to be back. "You've always done right by me, seems like I should return the favor," Steve reminded her softly.

"I think a friend is plenty to ask from a husband." Natasha admitted quietly. She wasn't really the marrying type, her life had been too much... of everything, to really allow space for something like that. But she certainly had ideas about what it might be like and friendship? That seemed like more than enough for her.

It wasn't really a loss, to have woken up and found herself as she had once been, but a part of her would mourn the chance she had over the last week to live in a way that was so much closer to normal than anything she had ever had the chance to do in her own life. To have grown up with people like Steve, even Clint and Bucky too would have changed everything about who she was, she knew, but that might not have been the worst thing that ever happened to her. Still she was glad for Steve, that he was back to himself, in this body, in the life he'd chosen for himself, not one that he felt like he had to live to please others.

"It's what we do, right?" She reminded him. They took care of each other, they had before they'd come here, and they had when they were kids, some thing just didn't change no matter what shape they were in. And that was it's own kind of comfort.

She was right, what more was there? Tony and he were much better partners because they were also friends. Their foundation had been built on teaching one another, learning and enjoying the same things, plenty of mutual attraction had been there too but it had taken a backseat for a while there. It was about time it came into the foreground. "You don't ask for much then, huh?"

Growing up together like that would have been better for all of them, maybe some more than others. But as they'd grown they would have become themselves but Bucky and Steve would have been different, Steve even more so. Not to mention the age gap between him and Tony would have been even greater and he couldn't have that, he was glad to be back to himself for plenty of reasons but that one was the most important.

They were family, Steve had never had siblings but Natasha was like a sister, except it was even more intense. They'd been through so much together and he turned his head to kiss her temple, breathing in slowly. "That's right," he agreed. "There's no one else I'd want for my first girlfriend, you know. First and last."

"I don't need much," She agreed of Steve's assessment. And well considering the sort of match they'd made even as children? Well friendship seemed like plenty. Little Steve, who was so earnest and sweet, who danced with her just because he'd seen that maybe she'd have liked to, who had made her a picnic and asked her to go steady. Yeah, they would have been really good friends. Just like they were now, a part of one another.

But she was no fool either, she knew that Tony and Steve belonged together, for all that they'd never quite been able to manage it back home, she saw how they were together. And she knew it was the sort of thing that would have always been there between them too, even as children. They were all better off grown once more, back where they were supposed to be, with who they were supposed to. It had only ever been playing house with her and Steve.

"You make for a nice boyfriend, Steve. I hope for Tony's sake though, you're a better dancer now than you were then." She teased him a little, pulling herself away from that edge of sadness and just a touch of regret that would do none of them any good. She smiled and leaned into him just a little bit more.
