You are mistaken. You may be conflating canon with fanfic, or "sixteen" (which is what Snape does say: "showed he was capable of murder at the age of sixteen") with "sixth year". But most Hogwarts students turn sixteen sometime during fifth year. (The rest have their birthday during the summer holidays.)
