I think some of you might like a look at the face of the 'real' Severus. This bust of Lucius Septimius Severus (145 - 211) can be found at the Roman-German Museum at Cologne, Germany.

Many of you may know that Machiavelli used this Roman emperor for his book 'The Prince', but he's certainly worth looking at from slightly different historical angle. The historic Severus was actually a very efficient and popular ruler.

  • That brings up a good point: Could Severus Snape have been well-liked and admired if he'd had a different upbringing or at least a more positive experience at Hogwarts?

Each Severus was driven, eloquent, and intelligent, yet their paths diverge so starkly.

The other Severus also has a straighter nose and better hair ;~P

But I'd say the answer is almost certainly, yes. Speaking from personal experience of removing a child from a bully-enabling private school to a government school in the same catchment area, if Snape had been removed from Hogwarts and sent to a school without the Marauders, he'd probably have made a wider circle of friends who liked him for himself.
