You know - it's possible that I feel queasy about this simply because I DO like dogs so much and hate having them compared to the Marauders - as if it gives dogs a bad name. But then I have usually dealt with dogs on a one to one basis (except for when we once owned a brother and sister pair) - not a pack.
I think I am looking at this more like the dogs of one of my friends and that is coloring my thinking. She has three dogs now and for most of the time I have known her has usually had two. And she is absolutely terrible in training her dogs. She just has never had a good voice for commands.
The three she owns now are rather ill-mannered and the two she had before that couldn't even be in the same room with each other without being leashed each to a separate chair. And I'm talking lap dogs, not rotweillers.
Having always had well-trained dogs, hers are overwhelming for me - but I have never thought of it as just a dog-pack's way. However, as you pointed out - the 'head' of the pack (in reality) is my friend and since she is not 'firm' with the dogs I can understand the 'chaos' you mentioned. If I look at the Marauder pack as having an external leader (albus) I suppose I understand.
It's just that they always seem to me to be a self-contained pack. I think I may be more comfortable with viewing them as a wild pack or feral - as I really don't see Albus as very involved with them until they join the Order
