Well - yes. Thank you for articulating my discomfort so clearly, Terri. ;) It's a bit startling that both women seem to think there are sins for which people can, essentially, be condemned for life - even if they apologize and do their best to make amends.
Yet, somehow, I still think that Austen and the other 19th century writers presented a more coherent worldview than does Rowling. I think this, in part, because they do not allow their heroes and heroines to get away with behaviors for which other characters are condemned.
