Odd, with your cut. Did you take a close look at the " ? If they are the formatted type from word processors, they won't work. Try the simple cut without key phrase, it automatically says 'Read more'.
No, sadly the preview doesn't tell us if the cut works. I usually post, see how it looks and if it is not ok, I go back in and edit. Which can be a pain in the behind if it is a formatted post.
I looked at the code of your post, and now, as the cut works, the " are the right ones. However, I see that further down in your text, you use the formatted type, slightly slanted. Like this: “The turn...
If you have one or two of the slanted quotation marks, the code will be mixed up horridly. That would explain why sometimes two lines of code work, and sometimes not. When you cut and paste your long text, try putting in the lj-cut line by hand when the rest is already posted in the browser. Or just type it again in the posting window (which always gives you the straight quotation marks) and delete the pasted version. I can't see any other reason why it shouldn't work.
