he joined because he wanted to make himself into an impressive person, and possibly thought he could leave again when he had what he wanted.

Yeah, I agree - I think his biggest concern was becoming an impressive person, and a 'great wizard' to impress Lily. He didn't know quite what he'd be getting into (nor that he wouldn't be able to get out, once in), I think.
