Re: Scraping the bottom of the barrel
We have discussed Severus as a teacher at length in the past. Did Severus really single Neville out and humiliate him on purpose, or was he reacting to what he interpreted as not trying enough and irresponsible behavior (bringing an uncontrolled pet into a Potions class? - btw Severus was not the only teacher who used Trevor as a subject, in PS Flitwick used him to demonstrate levitation, but Neville did not get the message and kept bringing him to classes)? As I said in the older thread, I had a teacher who had used very Severus-like language in class, and this did not detract from his popularity. And what does the fate of Neville's parents has to do with anything? Should he allowed to blunder incompetently through life, endangering people near him, because of that? I'm not saying Severus' way was the best, at least not in the short term (though perhaps some of Neville's ever-strengthening backbone came from enduring Severus, who knows?) but it was definitely not outside the norm or less than acceptable.
