geri_chan's cut did work. So what did she do right and I did wrong? I checked the source, and apparently she wrote her post in rich text, and these cuts seem to work in the feed.
So I tried the code, which is
It makes it easier for our LJ friends to look at their lists, and we don't need to pull our hair out where to hide the images so they won't spam.
I'll include this in the faq, please point people there if they have problems or questions with it. As you undoubtedly know, I cannot edit your posts (which is as it should be), so I can't help with corrections.
