Yes, he made his choices and that's his burden to bear. But I don't see how anyone can say that the treatment he received from the Marauders and Lily and especially Dumbledore didn't lead to his being disposed to making those decisions.
Exactly! The good side effect of banging my head against such stupidity is that it's motivated me to start reading up on issues of bullying and abuse in schools. Number one reason kids cite for choosing who to bully: The target "didn't fit in."

But this will just lead me to ranting about how if Dumbledore is the greatest headmaster Hogwarts has ever had, then that was one seriously fucked-up school for a millennium.

I can't imagine American wizarding culture logically being able to sustain that level of separation. We're too nosy. :)
