It's funny, but I used to avoid AU most of the time...but then DH came out and I realized how much better the alternatives were! ;-)
But seriously, these days I do like the idea of exploring what might/should have been if only.... Snape's especially fun for that, but I've also seen some nice fics on what would have happened if Harry had been less dismissive with Draco before the sorting ceremony or, even better, if Dumbledore hadn't left him stuck with the Dursleys. The possible repercussions for not only Harry but also many of the other kids in his year are pretty interesting to explore. Not as interesting as the many Snape scenarios, but pretty cool nonetheless. (Come to think of it, I like it best when Snape is the paternal figure to Harry, lol!
