A minor but nagging question

In the movies, what is the motto/slogan/written statement above the door in Snape's office? Between my ignorance of Latin beyond some roots and the lettering, I haven't a clue and it's driving me nuts! Please help.
  • I used to know, but I can only recall one and that was cos I used it in a picture: Calx of Mercury. I think they're all relating to alchemy.
  • There are quite a few, all seem to be alchemical references:

    Calx of Mercury
    Calx of Iron Sulphur
    Basil Valentine

Take a look at this post by the fabulous Catsplay for more info than you really wanted on the topic, including high-res photos.

    • Quotes on arches

Thank you all, but especially you, severed, for the link! I knew someone somewhere had to have gone through and figured it out. (And the alchemical stuff was interesting...)

      Gracias all!
  • You mean "potassa carbonate" as on the wall in the header on the community page?

Potassium carbonate - aka potash aka salt of tartar.
among its other uses is making soap.

I spent a great deal of time discussing this on another forum with some people who might be known here. If you look closely at ALL the arches (windows, doors and vaultings) of the ceiling it seems to be a 'quote' or perhaps alchemical recipe - ending with the name Basil Valentie - an historical figure in alchemy. - Hwyla

      Typo - Valentine
  • Yes this was a major, MAJOR discussion on Catsplay's Livejournal many months ago. It got so involved in fact it lost me!!
  • Hi, everyone! *waves* This is rattlesnakeroot from LJ, but I'm using silver_ink_pot over here. (That was my original forum name.)

Here is the link to the discussion Hwyla mentioned on Harry Potter Network:

And the "Potassa Carbonate" window Here.

Finally, the latest pictures from OotP are discussed starting on this page (we also obviously discussed this stuff for years!):
