Until the book "half-blood prince" came out, we'd no verification that anyone had one Wizarding and one Muggle parent. I believe we knew Tom had a Muggle father, and hated him, but I don't think it was confirmed that his mother was a witch. (Hating only his father for Muggleness would've been irrational, but hey, Mr. I AM LORD VOLDEMORT speaker-to-basilisks was hardly the most rational of people.)

For all that Harry gets called a "halfblood"--both his parents are magical; both graduated from Hogwarts. Until book 5, I wasn't sure anyone had magical-and-Muggle parents, and Witch/Muggle pairings in fanfic always seemed a bit skewed because of that.
