Where is Durmstrang?

Previous Entry Add to Memories Tell a Friend Next Entry
I need this for a Snape fanfic (SSHG).

What do you think where Durmstrang is? Any ideas? I think it's in North-Eastern Siberia, in the Northern Verkhoyansk Mountains, where the river Lena goes towards the arctic sea. There would be mountains, little daylight in winter, and a continuous connection of water if we assume that Hogwarts is close to a Loch that has some connection to the Atlantic. That way that ship could have traveled. I was wondering if it could be in Norway, but why would they have a Headmaster with a slavic name then? Here's a link: http://www.yakutiatravel.com/eng/travdir/polus.htm

Input would be greatly appreciated. :)
  • I only remember reading in the book that Durmstrang is North of Scotland. So, that leaves a lot of possibilities for fanfic writers to place it where ever they want. :)
    • Yeah, it could be anywhere. That frustrates me. ;)
      • I found an article on Mugglenet that might help you decide where Durmstrang is located. Here's the link:

        http://www.mugglenet.com/editorials/editorials/edit-olanick01.shtml
        • Thank you so much! That was great. I had completely overlooked the fact that Durmstrang has to be in Europe. So Siberia is out of the question. Well, I've learned a bit about Siberia on the way anyway.

“Durmstrang’s another wizarding school?” said Harry.
“Yes,” said Hermione sniffily, “and it’s got a horrible reputation. According to An Appraisal of Magical Education in Europe, it puts a lot of emphasis on the Dark Arts.”

So my Durmstrang will be in Norway, after all. Which is good, I need decent mountains with nice glaciers.
  • Some time ago, I saw this very interesting, well-reasoned and articulate discussion on Durmstrang's possible location and I CAN'T RECALL WHERE... *sigh*
I will think and ponder and rack my brain to try to recall where I read the discussion... and I'll also go through my LJ comms to see if I can backtrack it some-way.
But I can't imagine I was the only one who read the discussion - do you think one of the HP newsletters might post your question?
    • Oh, that sounds interesting! :D
I think snapenews probably will, they watch us. Others may pick it up or not. I'm not going to announce it.
      • I'm kicking myself for not being able to recall where I read it!!! I'm thinking it was possibly before Christmas, because I remember thinking that the person who initiated the discussion sounded as though they were going to write a fic for a fest.
I've gone back through the discussions on some LJ comms, but haven't found it as yet...
      • I can recall that the discussion was narrowed to (possibly) either Siberia or Finland/Lapland (near the Finnish border with USSR?), with some mention of Northern Norway. Because of the Slavic names, the Russia and Finland were considered the most likely.

Many things were taken into account - the necessity for ocean or lake access for the ship, the fur cloaks, the Slavic-sounding names, Krum's description of flying over the school and the long winter nights.

And, as I'm sure you realize, the name "Durmstrang" wasn't really considered a geographical pointer, because it's a play on Sturm und Drang.
        • Don't get too upset about it. Yes, Sturm und Drang, but it definitely isn't in Germany, LOL.
  • Is it ever reasoned that Karkarov is from the same place as Durmstrang? He was in Brittan during the time of the war and he was in Azkaban. Could he be English but of Slovic decent? And does it say in canon he has any sort of accent?

For some reason I was thinking that it was somewhere in northern Poland.
    • Norhtern Poland isn't far enough North. It has to be somewhere around the polar circle or north of it, I think. Victor talked about the days with little to no daylight, the mountains and the cold.
Apart from that, yeah, he could just happen to have slavic ancestors. Just like Gregorovich (sp) who really doesn't have a german name and lived there anyway.
    • I'm not even sure about the short days any longer, I might have confused that with the movie. So the only really thing we have is far north and much colder than Hogwarts.
      • Viktor hardly says a thing in the film. You're probably thinking of this:

"But ve have grounds larger even than these – though in vinter, ve have very little daylight, so ve are not enjoying them. But in summer ve are flying every day, over the lakes and the mountains –’"
        • Yes, exactly, thank you so much! And with Durmstrang being in Europe and everything... my Durmstrang will be in Norway.
  • I think Arkhangelsk Port, because, a) it's north of Scotland, and b) is a big Russian port. I think port due to the ship. I think Russia because of the slavic names and the fact that most of the Slavic countries have been in Russia's sphere of influence for quite a while.
    • From GOF: “But I think Durmstrang must be somewhere in the far north,” said Hermione thoughtfully. “Somewhere very cold, because they’ve got fur capes as part of their uniforms.”
“Ah, think of the possibilities,” said Ron dreamily. “It would’ve been so easy to push Malfoy off a glacier and make it look like an accident … shame his mother likes him …”

That's all I found. I must have confused the description with the movie. I could have sworn that there was mention of a castle and mountains, and the short days. I looked, because near the port there are no mountains... but if that is movie only, then it can very well be there. Sigh.
      • Definitely a mention of the short days and the castle in GoF - from the conversation between Viktor & Hemione at the Yule Ball:
'Vell, ve have a castle also, not as big as this, nor as comfortable, I am thinking,' [...] 'Ve have just four floors, and the fires are lit only for magical purposes. But ve have grounds even larger than these - though in vinter, ve have very little daylight, so ve are not enjoying them. But in summer ve are flying every day over the lakes and the mountains - ' GoF. p.363.
        • Aaaah, thank you, thank you, that was the passage I was thinking of, but didn't find it . Yes, I need mountains.
          • I found a list of Russian castles here
Wasn't Siberia mostly settled by nomads until rather recently? So that there wouldn't be a lot of castles? And weren't most of them wooden?

Norway's got lots of castles and mountains and cold. That might be a better place for it.
            • Thank you! Yes, Valady posted a link above to a Mugglenet essay that argues for Norway. I had completely forgotten that Durmstrang has to be in Europe, that rules out Siberia. Norway fits well for many reasons (and it has exactly the type of nice glaciers I need.)
  • To be honest, I don't know.

Is it mentioned in the Lexicon?

I was thinking that based on the accent of a few of the characters it was in Eastern Europe somewhere, like Romania or up in Siberia.
    • I didn't even think to look in the lexicon. I'm using it less and less these days.
I do think Siberia a likely place, too.
  • Heh. Because of the "Sturm und Drang" thing, I think I subconsciously assumed it was in a remote area in the mountains in Germany. ;-) I'm not sure how I reconciled the non-German names--hey, hired from abroad! works for me!--and I'm especially not sure how I thought they could sail a ship from Germany to England... magic, maybe? :-D

Fortunately, it sounds like we have some people on this group who are wiser in the ways of geography than I am. I'll settle for reading the fanfic when it's done!
    • The fanfic is my current WIP. I need it for one of the upcoming chapters.

Never mind, I'm very lousy in North American geography. Alabama? Yeah... well... uhm. North Carolina? Uh... yeah.... well...

I do get increasingly fascinated with Google maps. I could spend hours virtually flying over these satellite images, zooming in and out. I just love to check out my fic locations that way.
      • Oh, the "water" fic? I started reading that a long time ago. I really need to get Internet at home so I have time for leisurely reading... argh. Anyway, it's a good reminder to go back and read some more when I can.

And for what it's worth, I'm a Minnesotan, so Alabama and North Carolina are as foreign to me as they are to you. ;-) I live in Minneapolis, if you want to view it on Google someday!
        • Yes, it's the water fic. If you can read ij posts without trouble, I have a story journal: [info]storiesfromwood where I post all the chapters, new fic, drabbles and crack that I don't send to archives. So, if you want to read the WIP, it's a possibility. (Insert shifty grin here).
          • Yes, I can read IJ posts via my cell phone, via the Google-search formatting of web pages. (My e-mail gives me more trouble; if I get a really long e-mail, currently I can't read past the first page.) I will bookmark your IJ for future reading! Thanks for suggesting it; you'd think I'd have thought of it, already.

Now it seems I have a bit of catching up to do on other reading... Remind me to never again post anything of interest to the Underground. :-D
  • If you have a lot of time, I asked that question, among others, here: http://community.livejournal.com/grindeldore/102978.html

This is one very confusing and complicated school, but some people had great ideas.
    • I reread myself and my favorites are:
      1) A far nothern Island, which is off the maps (after all it's location is a huge secret) and therefore doesn't belong to any country obs.
      2) Karelia: which is partly in Finland, partly in Russia. There are lakes and mountains.
    • That's the discussion I was referring to in the above post!!! I could remember reading it and being very impressed by some of the arguments!
  • Durmstrang
