Snape's 'Other Women'
This should be good. ;) First a bit of canon . . . US Ed. p.740-1
"Snape's Patronus was a doe," said Harry, "the same as my mother's, because he loved her for nearly all of his life, from the time when they were children. You should have realized," he said as he saw Voldemort's nostrils flare, "he asked you to spare her life, didn't he?"
"He desired her, that was all," sneered Voldemort, "but when she had gone, he agreed that there were other women, and of purer blood, worthier of him-"
"Of course, he told you that," said Harry, "but he was Dumbledore's spy from the moment you threatened her, . . . "
I do think Voldemort has it wrong-even if Snape loved Lily obsessively, I believe he loved her as best as he was able. But Harry may have over simplified things and probably the truth lies between.
So who were these other women? Girlfriends? One night stands? Did they even exist? I just noticed for the first time that Voldemort said "he agreed that there were other women." That leaves quite a bit of wiggle room.
I would ask that we stick to canon-yes, yes, we all know he was shagging Lupin or waiting for Hermione to come of age :P but for the purposes of this discussion, please leave your favorite ship at the door.

Heh. That's my way of showing what I think of the whole idea of Voldemort discussing Severus' sex life with him. So stupid. No wonder there are fans who think the Death Eater meetings were all one big orgy!
he could be charming if he wanted to
Yes, he could. People tend to focus so much on the temperamental and snarky side of him, they forget (or maybe never realize) that he was a whole person, not just a two-dimensional caricature of Ultimate Snark. What strikes me in the scene with Narcissa is how he could not only be charming but genuinely concerned and decent, someone who could listen and engage in real conversation with someone. That's why I like writing fic about the "hidden" side of Severus, showing him acting like a human being in contexts in which he escapes the pre-set prejudices of people he' s known in the wizarding world.
Well, this is supposed to be about Snape's women, but the same principle applies
Yep. I think--only after DH, and the memories of Lily, mind you, seem to have established it--that canonically Severus was straight, but until DH it was still an open question for me. And, being of the anti-homophobia persuasion, I honestly didn't care either way how he turned out. ;-) And I think I might have told you that I was hoping one of the revelations of DH would be that he and Remus Lupin had A History. ;-) That had so much potential--and would have been a hell of a lot more interesting than Eternally Pining 4 Teh Lily. Ah, well.
