Snape's 'Other Women'

This should be good. ;) First a bit of canon . . . US Ed. p.740-1

"Snape's Patronus was a doe," said Harry, "the same as my mother's, because he loved her for nearly all of his life, from the time when they were children. You should have realized," he said as he saw Voldemort's nostrils flare, "he asked you to spare her life, didn't he?"

"He desired her, that was all," sneered Voldemort, "but when she had gone, he agreed that there were other women, and of purer blood, worthier of him-"

"Of course, he told you that," said Harry, "but he was Dumbledore's spy from the moment you threatened her, . . . "

I do think Voldemort has it wrong-even if Snape loved Lily obsessively, I believe he loved her as best as he was able. But Harry may have over simplified things and probably the truth lies between.

So who were these other women? Girlfriends? One night stands? Did they even exist? I just noticed for the first time that Voldemort said "he agreed that there were other women." That leaves quite a bit of wiggle room.

I would ask that we stick to canon-yes, yes, we all know he was shagging Lupin or waiting for Hermione to come of age :P but for the purposes of this discussion, please leave your favorite ship at the door.

"Light Between the Cracks" aside, therefore, I don't think Severus would risk either love or deep friendship.

Heh. I chuckled back when I first read this, because I wrote "Light Between the Cracks" to be an expression and examination of Canon Severus. The specific details are mine, of course--when writing a story, versus an essay, I had to invent something concrete--but the general pattern of how he went about falling in love again is pretty much how I would see it happening:

His head would be saying, "I'll never get over Lily," while his heart quietly went about the business of healing, even though the scars of remorse over her death would (understandably) remain.

His head would be saying, "No, it's too risky to get involved," while his heart would be allowing itself, increment by increment, to be drawn towards a source of welcome and friendship and acceptance and love, until he found himself in love, against his "better judgment."

Also keep in mind that real-life spies (e.g., CIA agents) do not generally take vows of celibacy. ;-) They marry, they have families, they love and are loved. Presumably the risks go with the territory of their chosen profession, as with, say, police officers--who also can potentially put their loved ones at risk in the line of their duties. I've known it to happen.
