Harry understood that his lover was a fastidious, ritualistic man. Severus Snape could not stand disorder in his life. Harry believed it was a consequence of years of spying—one mistake could have ruined everything.
Severus woke up at six in the morning everyday. He had two cups of tea and a piece of toast for breakfast. He taught his classes and skipped lunch in the Great Hall so he could clean his storeroom. He arrived for dinner in their quarters promptly at half after five every evening. He took the seat facing the door with his wand next to his right arm so he could ward off attack. He had two more cups of tea with dinner. He ate two helpings of dessert on Sunday evenings. He marked papers after dinner until nine, then he read until bedtime.
At midnight, Severus changed out of his robes and into a soft, worn black nightshirt that Harry had given him their first Christmas together. He checked their quarters twice, making sure the doors were locked and the wards were set. Severus climbed into bed, lying on his right side so Harry could wrap an arm around him and he could protect him against any intruders.
Knowing his husband’s tendencies, Harry didn’t say anything when Severus rearranged his desk so that everything was in a different place. He kept quiet about Severus alphabetizing his books and organizing them by subject. He simply smiled as Severus complained about his messiness and color coordinated Harry’s side of the wardrobe.
Others would have found Severus’s behavior trying, but Harry didn’t mind. The peace of mind that Severus got from taking care of the little details in their lives was well worth the minor inconveniences. Besides, Harry rather liked having someone look after him so well.
