The house elves seemed surprised when he arrived and ordered every stitch of clothing be washed and every inch of his quarters cleaned. They did as they were told, Hermione Granger's propaganda about manumission be damned, and while they worked Severus cast cleaning charms on his classroom, the potion storage rooms, and his personal lab.

Then he took a long, hot, thorough shower, with particular attention to his hair, nails, and underarms. He shaved as closely as he could, brushed and flossed his teeth, and slapped on his best aftershave.

If he still stank, it wasn't for lack of trying.
