Fortunately for Severus' sanity (and the structural integrity of the castle), young Lupin was an acceptable brewer who'd managed to scrape a NEWT in Potions (and oh, Severus would never think of that acronym again without shuddering). Severus accordingly put him to work researching possible solutions while the actual physical beast made disgusting noises and devoured his breakfast.
It was about the time that James Potter knocked over his water bowl and kicked used newt litter out of his enclosure into the fire that Teddy Lupin burst into Severus' quarters waving a book and shouting, “By George, I've got it!”
