Now that the magical plants had been re-established in the Hogwarts greenhouses, the next step was to expand their cultivation. The Wizarding World had lost much when only professional herbologists grew certain varities, which threatened genetic diversity and made entire species vulnerable to war, disease, and magical attack.
This necessitated getting the seeds and bulbs into the hands of ordinary Wizards and Witches. Severus was more than happy to speak to the Ministry about this – being able to namedrop former members of the Order was a distinct advantage – but he valued his privacy as well.
