Gran was so happy to see him that Severus was seated in her best chair, sipping tea from her treasured Royal Doulton, and served fairy cakes before he could ask a single question. It was all so nice that he almost forgot why he'd visited in the first place.

He carefully set his cup down. "Gran? The solicitor told me Da went away - "

"I know, love." She dabbed at her eyes. "He said he was looking for work, but where's he been? I'm that worried."

Severus frowned. If Gran didn't know where his father had gone, who did?
