Challenge #213: Libraries. The domain of Irma Pince at Hogwarts. The hidden library at Spinner's End. The rare works to be found in Malfoy Manor's collection. The local Muggle library that Severus discovered as a child. This week's challenge is to write a drabble focusing on Snape and a library.

Snape felt himself solidify. His vision cleared, and all around him he saw row after row of bookshelves, interspersed with chairs and desks. Moonlight filtering through tall windows illuminated the room.

“Where the heck am I?” he asked, not really expecting an answer.

“It’s a public library,” said a familiar voice, pleasantly. Turning around he saw Lupin, Tonks and Dumbledore seated at a table along with a girl holding a small dog, a very large lion, a pirate with a wooden leg, and a gruff bearded dwarf holding an axe.

Lupin smiled. “It’s the afterlife, Severus. Here we live forever.”

The bookshelves offered rare tomes, forbidden and therefore desirable. Severus ran his fingertips along the spines, relishing the tingle of magic.

“Se-ev! I’m bored. Don’t you spend enough time in mouldy libraries already?”

Where to start? Crippling Curses?

“Sev-er-us, come on! Let’s go hex my Uncle Pollux’s portrait. It’ll be fun!”

The Joy of Hex, Strong Poisons…

“Sev! If you don’t stop that, I won’t invite you to my house ever again!”

Severus scowled but complied. Regulus’ company was tedious, but his ‘friendship’ brought access to the Black family library.

Severus was willing to suffer for the sake of knowledge.
