Challenge #212: Headmaster Snape, Redux. Back in 2004, there was a challenge to write Snape as Headmaster; however that was long before we knew precisely what the circumstances surrounding Snape's time as headmaster would be. This week's assignment is to set your drabble during Severus Snape's return to Hogwarts in Deathly Hallows and focus on something related to his role as headmaster. (Extra bonus points for any scenario that's not unrelentingly gloomy.)

Notes: It’s tough to find something that isn’t grim about Snape’s year as Headmaster, but I finally came up with one enjoyable power.

The Headmastership was hardly an honour; constant struggle was rewarded only with undisguised hatred and suspicion.

Though Severus’ title was prestigious, he’d never felt so impotent. Only house elves and portraits were sworn to obey his every command.

“Why so gloomy, Severus?" Dumbledore’s portrait inquired. “It’s most unbecoming.”

“Longbottom insists on courting danger; he’s mistaken rashness for bravery, the imbecile!”

“Ah, so like his parents! I knew his Gryffindor nature would out eventually. The Sorting Hat is never wrong, Severus…”

Do shut up, Dumbledore.”

Instantly, there was silence. Severus smirked up at the consternated portrait.

Leadership did have some perks.
