She was impossibly weightless in his arms, so light that Severus wondered if she might float away. She was not yet burdened by shame or sins, free of the sorrow and misery that came with experience.

Like every beacon of hope he’d encountered, her presence paralysed him with fear; he dared not cling too desperately, yet the idea of letting go filled him with panic.

Her eyes were dark as his, reflecting back such matchless love and trust that it quite took his breath away.

“Hello, Miss Snape,” Severus whispered.

She offered him the honour of her first toothless smile.

“I didn’t ask you to save me,” Snape whispered.

“No, you didn’t.” The bright-eyed man practically twinkled as he pulled the blanket up to the potions master’s neck.

“Why, pray tell, would you do such a thing, then?” Snape’s throat had been all but torn out by Nagini, and if his rescuer hadn’t shown up at just the right point in time, even with the potions and anit-venin, he wouldn’t have survived.

Still, of all people…

“Because I’m a hero. And because nobody else was going to claim you, so now you’re mine,” Lockhart said softly, kissing Snape’s forehead.
