School uniforms.

They were designed to give the wearer a sense of identity with the institution he or she attended, Severus mused. To imbue the students with a sense of pride in that identity, and to lend dignity and a necessary sense of order to the establishment.

They had the secondary quality, and indeed purpose, of making all the pupils appear the same, regardless of background. Rich or poor. Pureblood or muggleborn.

Father or son, obviously.

Severus wondered how different things might have been if, that first day of Harry Potter’s schooling, he’d seen a skinny boy in over-large hand-me-downs.
