All his life, he’d worn costumes provided by others.
Severus’ early wardrobe had been a motley collection of rejects: Dad’s coat, Mum’s blouse, Oxfam trousers.
His school robes were secondhand, decorated with stains and mends illustrating the stories of previous students; he sometimes longed to tell his own tale, instead of making do with somebody else’s.
Later, everything he’d worn had been for others: a mourner’s suit for Lily, a mask for Voldemort, teaching robes for Dumbledore.
The Muggle clothes Severus wore now weren’t posh, but they were his choice, as a free man.
He liked them best of all.
