Draco finishes his tea and puts down his book. Night is falling and soon it'll be too dark out here to read.
It's been a beautiful summer so far, and though part of him greatly enjoys the peace and quiet of his present existence, sometimes he still misses his time at Hogwarts, and his thoughts end up drifting to all those things he would have done differently - very differently, if ever given half the chance.
Not that such thinking serves any kind of purpose, of course. He’s well aware that it’s no use crying over spilled milk.
And besides, he has already redeemed himself.
He did his part to help rebuild the wizarding world. He donated a small fortune to the new hospital and a wealth of books from the vast Malfoy library was shipped off to Hogwarts when it first reopened.
But still…
Sometimes, he feels that wasn’t nearly enough.
But then again, would anything ever be enough? All the riches and regrets in the whole wide world probably couldn’t make up for all the terrible wrongs his father did.
And of course Harry Potter still hates him as well.
Another situation that’s doomed to never change, much as he would like it to.
Startled, Draco looks up as a loud, piercing shriek suddenly breaks through his musings.
It sounds like a banshee, though that’s hardly possible, he reasons. Their kind has been extinct for decades.
Frowning, he gets up and heads off in the direction of the noise.
It beckons him deep into the gardens, until he can hear finally it clearly. It’s a desperate cry for help. It seems to come from inside a large purple flower with its petals tightly shut.
Draco shakes his head.
He knows those flowers well. Severus brought them home as a gift for his parents once.
A dangerous gift, it soon turned out, because those stunning flowers are carnivorous when they want to be, and with their bright colours and alluring scent, they’re probably the worst kind of predators.
So far, Draco has set up cat repellants, rabbit repellants and bird repellants, so the greedy plants wouldn’t trap any unsuspecting prey. Maybe he should just have them cut down, no matter how fond his late mother was of them.
He readies his wand and yells, "Expelliramus!”
The plant opens with a loud crack, and a small winged creature falls out. It’s clearly female, wearing a white dress and white shoes and sparkling all over.
"Thank you," she says, straightening her silver hair.
“You’re quite welcome,” Draco replies with a smile.
“I’m a fairy,” she tells him, “and I’d like to grant you a wish. Anything you desire. You did save my life, after all.”
Draco doesn't have to think about his answer for long. In spite of all the riches, his life is lonely and empty and full of bitter regrets.
"I wish Harry Potter could have been my friend," he says, "or is that too much to ask for?"
"Of course not." She beams him a smile. "Anything is possible.” She waves her wand, sending colourful glitter flying in all directions.
“Your wish has been granted,” she informs him, and the next thing Draco knows, his whole world goes black.
