Neville strolled through Hogsmeade, nodding politely to those he knew. As he looked up ahead, his friendly smile was replaced with a scowl. Sitting outside of Demitasse, the new coffee shop in town, were none other than Draco Malfoy and Blaise Zabini. Neville stopped and watched the interaction between two men. Blaise stood to leave, bent down and placed a gentle kiss on Draco’s cheek before turning and walking down the street.
Draco remained at the table, so wrapped up in stirring his coffee that he never heard Neville approach.
Neville cleared his throat to capture Draco’s attention. “We need to talk,” he said tersely.
Draco glanced up, before returning his attention on the coffee cup. “I have nothing to say to you, Longbottom.”
Neville sat and pushed the cup of coffee away from Draco’s hand. “Well I have quite a bit to say, and you’re going to listen!”
Draco looked at the determined man in front of him as he shrugged his shoulders in response.
Taking a deep breath, Neville continued, “What the hell were you thinking Malfoy? You just walk out the door and leave Harry as if the last few months never happened? Are you that much of a cold-hearted bastard?”
Draco stared at Neville as if he had never seen him before. “What the hell are you on about, Longbottom? You know nothing about Harry and me, you sanctimonious bastard!”
“I know that Harry really cared for you and now you’re going through men like Dumbledore went through lemon drops.”
Draco’s mouth fell open as he attempted to respond. “Going through....men? I’m not sure why the fuck you think it’s your business or where you are gathering your information from, Longbottom, but you are dead wrong about me.” Draco leaned across the table and pressed a finger into Neville’s chest to emphasize his point.
“But I saw you...first you and Nott and now you and Blaise! You can’t deny it, I saw you!” Neville shouted as he slapped Draco’s finger off his chest.
“This may be a foreign concept to you Gryffindors, but but Slytherins really do have friends. Friends who care about us and offer us comfort when we are upset. Nothing more. Shite, Longbottom, get your brain out of the gutter, or is that what comes from dating a Weasley?” Draco spat out sharply, as he stood to leave.
“And again, not that it is any of your damn business, but Harry gave up on us long before I left.” Draco’s voice hitched as he continued, “The sorry son of a bitch never even looked up as I was walking out the door.“
Neville stared thoughtfully as Draco turned and swiftly strode onto the street. He sat for a few more minutes, wondering what it all meant. Something in Draco’s behaviour today just didn’t fit with everything he had seen. He sighed as he stood and Apparated home.
Bill was just setting the wine on the table when he heard Neville Apparate into the front hall of their flat. He watched as Neville slowly entered the room, his brow furrowed in concentration.
“What’s wrong, Nev?” Bill asked as he wrapped his arms around his lover.
Neville stretched up and kissed Bill lightly on the lips. “After I left Harry’s flat, I went to Hogsmeade. I saw Draco with Blaise Zabini. I kinda yelled at him for being with a different bloke each time I saw him.”
Bill looked surprised, and gave Neville’s hand a little squeeze in response.
“His reaction confused me.” Neville said and proceeded to repeat his conversation with Draco to Bill.
Bill questioned Neville several times about Draco’s facial expressions. When Neville really thought about it, he was fairly certain Draco had seemed hurt by Harry’s lack of response.
Neville gasped and his eyes grew wide as he rushed over to the Floo to Fire Call Hermione. He called over his shoulder to Bill, “Oh shite, I’m beginning to wonder if this whole mess could have been avoided. What if it was just a huge miscommunication?”
