Severus looked up to see who his next interrogator would be.
“And this just gets better and better,” he sniped upon seeing Harry Potter standing there.
Harry smiled, but said nothing, sitting across the table from his former teacher and just staring at him.
It unnerved Snape, who had expected Harry to hex first and ask later. This thoughtful Potter was a new animal, and for the first time, Snape felt a frisson of fear go through him.
“Well?” he snapped. “Ask your question so that I can get Kissed and be done.”
Harry just regarded him as if contemplating some great mystery. Finally, he spoke,
“You don’t have to answer me, of course, but I was just wondering if you’d tell me why you saved me all those times?”
Severus tried to sneer. “Imbecile. I was playing my part. Dumbledore had to believe I was on his side in this. What better way than to protect his protégé until it became advantageous to turn you over?”
“But you never did,” Harry said, a strange glint in his eye. “And I know now that you had plenty of opportunities. Even in that last battle, you saved me. Why?”
Severus rolled his eyes. “I saw the way the battle was going, Potter. I thought it might buy me some goodwill on your side. I am not a Slytherin for nothing.”
Harry shook his head and leaned in. “No one saw but me,” he said softly. “Why did you do it?”
“I don’t have to justify myself to you,” Severus snarled.
Harry looked him straight in the eyes, and Severus fought to keep his mind closed.
“Let me in, please? Legilimens,” Harry whispered, and suddenly he was there...
There, as Severus begged to not have to be Harry’s hated professor, as he watched Harry and Ginny from afar, as he ached the night he had to kill and then give Harry the last bit of advice he could before going back to his role as spy in an enemy court, as he hexed Death Eaters left and right in the final battle, allowing Harry to get to Voldemort, as he wished for death before he burdened Harry any further...
With a gasp, Severus came back to himself, unsurprised to feel wetness on his cheeks, but quite shocked to find himself sitting on the floor, being cradled in Harry’s arms.
“Severus, why did you never tell me?”
The question was so tender that Severus had no defense from it.
“How could I tell you what you meant to me? You were my student; I am old enough to be your father...”
“But you’re not my father,” Harry said, brushing a kiss across Severus’ temple. “I don’t see you like that at all. And I’ve longed for you.”
“How did you figure out how I felt?” Severus asked, relaxing for the first time in years.
“Dumbledore’s portrait hinted at it,” Harry said, a trace of laughter in his voice. “And you never once tried to justify your actions to me.”
Severus sighed. “Am I not to die, then?” he asked.
Harry shook his head. “You’re free to go,” he said, “The Wizengamot ruled today, but... I’d hoped you would stay with me.”
“Why, Harry?”
Harry smiled as he linked his fingers with Severus’.
“You’re going to make me justify why I love you, aren’t you?” he asked.
Severus smiled back. “Probably every day.”
