Who: Xaphania and Lee
What: meeting! talking! warm happy feelings!
where: the air field!
when: Monday mid-afternoon

Xaphania liked watching them reach for the sky, it was was brought her to the air field day after day. She didn't need a job, nor really a place to stay; she didn't need to eat, or wash herself or her clothing. It gave her all the time in the world to do fun things, like watch little matchstick men look to the skies and try to make her his.

Oh, how she longed to fly herself, to feel the sun on her wings and just breathe. But she had promised herself that she would not, so she did not. It was too small a field to be trapped in, if she dared, someone would see. There was no place safe from prying eyes.

As she came upon the field today, she recognised the hare jumping amongst the dandy-lions. "Hester," she said so quietly it was less than a whisper; but she was an angel, and if she wanted her whisper to carry, it would. She smiled as she saw Lee next to him - Lee, not a ghost, but fully formed. This wasn't a dream, nor was it heaven, but she felt no ill about seeing the man. How could she make him see and understand? Perhaps the hare had heard the whisper and knew what it meant. Perhaps not, but in time Xaphania was certain she and the brave protector would come to know the other.

That day was the day they were going to take flight.

Lee had meant to quit his job and leave New York for good and return to the skies which he had so missed but after Hester would not let him sleep until he promised her he wouldn't, he decided to just take the day off; it was just a test flight, after all. Make sure things are right and in order and all. There were still a few things lacking but if this test flight worked, then Lee decided that they wouldn't need them.

He was coordinating matters with Lawrence, his mechanic, while they sewed the balloon into their wicker basket and Hester was busy getting out of the way or kicking the canvas or the rope if it would help Lee gather things up. And then he called her.

"Yeah?"

Lee turned to look at Hester and lifted a brow.

"Y'called," Hester said. "What is it?"

Lee's brows narrowed and he shook his head.

"Something wrong, Mr. Scoresby?" asked Lawrence behind him.

"Not a thing, Sir," Lee said to Lawrence turning back to him. "Just a speck on my shoe, that's all."

Hester knew he couldn't talk right now as they were among a human without a dæmon...which begs the question, why had he called her?

Or did he really call her?

The source was so soft and yet so audible, she was almost sure that it had come from Lee's space but apparently not -- and she was not known to pick up on things that weren't there. Intrigued -- and wronged and determined to redeem herself -- she looked around, and it was there that she found the lone lady standing in a distance and she tilted her head to a side and twitched her ears.

She was cautious to approach - no-one else had a daemon in corporeal form around them, and while she'd only truly met Lee as a ghost, she'd seen Hester and he around. She'd picked up on the different time streams - a concept she couldn't understand, but Dust must have had a reason, perhaps trying to right itself after all those wrong years.

"Hester," she said again quietly when she was closer. "You don't know me, but I know you. And Lee, the flying aeronaut, who love Lyra like his own. It's a pleasure to see familiar company in such a strange place."

Lee looked like he was about to take off and she called to him, "When you've a minute, Mr Scoresby?"

Like a child who'd been summoned by the call of his favorite food, Lee whirled to look at the source of the voice and found himself gazing at a blonde woman who was suddenly there -- and looking none too bad, too. There was something about her that drew and kept his attention to her.

Or maybe it was Hester, who was growing ever more suspicious and intrigued at the same time by this new character. She had completely missed her arrival -- and what did she mean that she knew the but they didn't? How did she know their name and who was Lyra? She turned to Lee for his decision.

But well, Lee wasn't one to turn down the invitation of a beautiful woman. "I do have a minute, Ma'am, an hour if y'like." Turning to Lawrence, he asked the mechanic for the same courtesy before he started towards her, removing his hat to comb his hair back and flatten it again with his hat.

"How can I be of service, Ma'am?" he asked as he finished his approach.
