"All right," she agreed to his lack of desire to talk about it. She could understand that and she wasn't the least put out by it. She wondered though if she should leave or simply try to talk about something else. They were here and she was in no rush to head off ... so she guessed she'd try some small talk and see how it went.

"So have you been here long? Or ... are you a native to the area?" She didn't know, of course, though after her adventure with disbelief from a native, she was going to try to keep the 'yes, I'm from 2012' bit to herself unless the person she was talking with admitted to not being from here, either.
