"Maybe not for long. There's a rumor-- there's a British company looking at us. You might be more at home than you'd think." They were still just rumours, and Peggy wasn't privy to the details. She suspected Joan knew more than she was telling any of them, and Don and Roger had to know plenty.
She glanced around the kitchen for a moment before choosing a drawer to poke around in. She managed to find something in that first drawer, and even though it wasn't really a pack of lifesavers, they looked enough like them that Peggy would have had one herself. She never had been fussy about brand names. Peggy lifted two packs from the drawer. "Found them. You know, there's a really good sandwich cart downstairs, if you're after something more substantial." Despite popular appearances, one could not just survive the day on Tom Collinses and Whiskey.
Lily's final question and the phrasing of it have her a moment of pause. "'For this time'? I don't know what you mean exactly, but I am the only woman copywriter here." She couldn't help it when her words turned slightly defensive. "I don't know what you hear in the pool, but I'm good at what I do." And I got the job fairly, she thought.
