Merlin, it could have been just days off from happening in Remus' life ... hours, maybe. Maybe it had already happened and Remus just hadn't heard about it. He was building himself up to saying it when Moony started asking all his questions.
"Remus," he broke in, concerned that the other man was going to go through a list of everyone they'd ever known, coming up with horrible things that could have happened to them. His voice was strained, raw as he confirmed, "It was Lily and James."
Even though Lily being alive here -- even if she was younger -- had lessened some of the pain and he was clinging tightly to the idea that she could now change things, he still saw their dead bodies when he closed his eyes. He shook his head as he looked away, forcing himself to go on. "Pete was their secret keeper, but he ... he was working for Voldemort," he spat out, his jaw tightening, clinging to the anger since that was easier for him to process.
"I didn't put it together in time. They were both ... dead, when I got there. Harry. I don't know how, but Harry was okay."
