Friday Night Magical Meet and Greet
Who: Galen and Open
Where: The Welcome Center cafeteria
When: Friday evening
What: Galen has invited magic users and interested others
           over for pizza and beer.
Rating: Probably PG for language if nothing else
Status: Incomplete/Open

He'd had pizza delivered and placed stasis spells on the boxes so it would remain hot and fresh. There were two small kegs of beer iced down in washtubs - one American and one dark ale - and plenty of plastic cups, paper plates, and napkins.

As the appointed time approached, he got a cup of the ale and took a seat near the front of the room to wait and see who would actually show up. If nothing else, he supposed there would be plenty of pizza and beer left over for for breakfast in the morning.

Zee was convinced that this would end badly. This kind of thing always ended badly. Magicians who didn't quite know each other enough to be trusted, who all wielded different magics gathering together in one small space? Forget clashing personalities, she was more worried about clashing powers and abilities. The only person supposed to attend whom she knew was the one organising the whole thing, and even Galen wasn't someone that Zatanna could say she knew. He was a passing acquaintance at best, someone she'd met at the car race a few weeks back while she'd been showing off for children. Honestly, it was always the showing off that got her into trouble, wasn't it?

Still, she was confident in her own abilities and knew that she could get herself out of a jam if something or someone went awry. And to his credit, Galen was right in noting that they had more of a chance of finding a way out of here together than they did alone. With your powers combined... she thought, grinning to herself at the modern reference.

She paused a moment to smooth her skirt and clear her throat before entering. Quickly she ran over a few spells in her head. simple reversed words that would prove useful if this turned ugly. Contrary to popular belief, she did have to practice her pronunciation and she certainly didn't want anyone hearing her stumble. She was a professional, after all, and hopefully that was what everyone in the room would see her as: A television professional. Zee wasn't one to walk in and spill personal secrets on a dime.

"Evening," she said pleasantly enough, finally stepping into the room. "Galen, is it?"

Galen stood when the woman entered the room; he recognized her from the day of the automobile race.

"Galen indeed, Miss Zatanna. Good to see you this evening. We have hot pizza under a stasis spell, American lager and dark ale on ice." He pointed as he spoke. "Make yourself at home, as they say here."

"I know you expressed some doubts about tonight's gathering, so I am happy to see you here. Did you have anything to add to the agenda? I know you are currently a professional performing mage. Did you have any input on the idea of organizing the rest of the magic users?"

"That would be me," Galen replied with a smile. "Galen, at your service. This is Zatanna Zatara." The new arrival was a couple of inches taller than he, even before she put on her boots. And her legs did appear to go all the way to the floor.

"Any grand insights you can pass on to the rest of us about our situation? Comments on the idea of organizing the local magic users?"

"Our...situation?" Jadis repeated, as if she was so surprised that other bibbidy-bobbidy-boo folk weren't enjoying themselves in this land of rot and misfortune. "I'm afraid not. I have been here for a good many months, and it seems as if we are not meant to have the answers quite yet." Because Lord knows if there were answers to be found, she would have seized upon them already.

She didn't want beer or pizza but a cigarette instead. The pack of Marlboro menthols was extracted from her pocket, and she offered one to Galen here. "Are you looking to start a magic user's guild? That's a noble endeavor. I would presume that any participants would use different kinds of magic native to their lands, and naturally be under the impression that theirs is superior." However mistaken they might be.

Glancing around the room, she took note of a redhead and a woman with a bad dye job before focusing back on Galen, eyebrow quirked expectantly as if she was waiting for some astounding revelation from him.

"Oh, you know, stuck here, unable to leave, some powers missing or not working properly. Things like that."

Galen refused the offered cigarette with a polite wave of his hand. "Magic guild, referral office, consulting mages, refuge for those without resources when they first arrive. Just some vague ideas to consider. As to superior magic, does it matter? Do you have some different thoughts on the matter, or other ideas to bring into discussion?"

"Oh, and I didn't catch your name?"

The coffin nail went between the witch's lips once it was lit, and she took a satisfying first puff. "Of course it matters. Do you want a bunch of egotistical pricks sitting around with their heads inflated or do you want to actually get things done in your referral office?"

A rhetorical question. He could make of it however he liked. She exhaled smoke in a long, thin stream. "My name is Jade. We spoke briefly before. So what services do you offer, Galen? Tell me more." The introduction was 'at your service,' so Jadis would presume they would be good.

Zatanna didn't offer her hand to Jadis immediately, and when she did it was tentative. The read she was getting off the woman made her want to purse her lips, but she was no professional aura reader. It wasn't one of her strengths and for all she knew it could have just been the apprehensions she had about the event already seeping into her interactions. She offered a smile instead as she listened to Jadis and Galen speak.

Her ears perked at the mention of a guild of sorts. She wasn't quite used to not being the only magician in the group, considering that her usual group was the JLA. "It shouldn't matter who's magic is superior. None of us are from the same time or place, as far as I can tell. I'm sure we all have something to offer other than our egos."

"How many of us would be what we are without our egos?" Galen chuckled. "But I still don't see the point. What matter if you can destroy a planet when all it takes is the slightest pressure on an artery to cause a heart attack and eliminate the source of the problems on that planet?"

He considered the question. "I suppose mostly a base of operations, like-minded individuals to assist with tasks, possibly some financial aid to new arrivals... What would the two of you like to see!"

Susan walked over to the group at the front of the room. Of course she'd been listening in, but there were magic users here, and nobody has cast the first privacy spell.

"Susan Sto Helit," she introduced herself into a silence in the conversation. "I have to agree with Galen. After all, the best curse is the one you never cast."

Lily was not in the best mental place, and she'd honestly thought about scrapping the meeting all together. But she had said she'd attend, and she reasoned that the least she could do was make an appearance -- happy face optional.

She wasn't feeling much like smiling lately.

While it was the weekend and she was looking forward to looking for other places to live with Remus and Sirius, the news of her impending death was a bit of a downer. She supposed she was glad to know about it if only for the chance to change it when she went back. Because she would change it. She wouldn't die. Not like that. She wouldn't be the victim of betrayal. She wouldn't be a victim at all if she could help it.

As she entered the cafeteria, she tried to shake off the thoughts so she could at least pretend to be pleasant tonight. She wouldn't have to stay long, she knew, but she'd try to stay long enough to be polite.

Offering a wave to the two people already engaged in conversation, but not inclined to interrupt them, Lily instead moved to the pizza, taking a couple of slices for herself before finding somewhere to sit and wait for Remus and Sirius and ... well, whoever else was going to show up.

Susan used her ability to be more or less invisible - or at least hard to notice - when she showed up exactly on time as usual. There was a man, probably Galen, talking to two women at the front of the room. Galen was unusual; his magic was a different sort than anything she'd ever seen before. One of the women was a witch of some sort, the other obviously a Bad Witch. Susan's ability to see people as they truly were could be a bother sometimes. She did hope she wasn't brought here to be the Good Witch opposition to the Bad Witch. She wasn't feeling particularly Good these days. At least being Good didn't mean you had to be Nice.

And there was Lily sitting farther back in the room. Susan looked over the food; the pizza was under a stasis spell of some sort and would be fresh later. Beer, too, although she did hope there would be no quaffing. Letting herself fade into view, Susan walked over and sat down next to Lily.

"Hello again," she said to the younger girl. "Anything interesting happen yet?"

Lily smiled slightly when she recognized Susan, though she shook her head to the question. "Not here. Not yet, at any rate. They've just been chatting." She should have gone over to join them, she knew, but she really wasn't feeling up to it. She'd hoped she'd be better once she got here, but the past few days had been spent in something of a haze. She was hoping the weekend would shake the worst of it, because she really couldn't exist in that kind of a funk for long.

"How have you been?" she asked as she picked a bit of cheese off her pizza to eat it. She was still debating whether or not she wanted to share with people outside her world what happened to her when she went back. Mostly she was siding toward no, at least not yet, because she still wasn't in a place where she could talk about it without breaking down.

"Probably take a while for egos to begin to clash tonight. Maybe not at all. With so many new arrivals you'd hope everyone would be on their company manners, but you never no. I suppose I'll introduce myself in a while."

Susan frowned. "I've been well enough, even if I am still angry with this situation. Grandfather says I'm angry with most situations, so that's nothing new. What about you? How are you getting on? Settling in a little?"

"Well, I don't have much of an ego, so I suppose I won't do much clashing then," Lily murmured with a slight smile. "Manners tend to fade in the heat of the moment or in the face of something ... unusual." And what was a bunch of foreign magic, if not unusual? Then again, if you got enough of the right kind of people together, manners didn't even exist.

"Nothing to be done about it though," she pointed out. She herself was a little rageful toward the situation, though given what she found out happened when she went home, she was reconsidering her position. If she could change it, she was all about rushing home. If she couldn't though ...

"Well enough. I've gotten a job. I've been working at Sterling-Cooper as a secretary. One of my friends from home showed up. My fiance's best mate," she clarified. Her smile faltered a little, and she dropped her eyes slightly. "So we're all going to look about and see if we can find a flat or something this weekend. And to start looking for a job for him. Poor bloke's never worked a day in his life. He ... had an inheritance and his family had money," she explained. "But he's clever, so I'm sure we'll find him something."

Susan chuckled. "Not much of an ego? Are you sure you're a witch?"

"Nothing to be done yet, at any rate."

She nodded. "Sounds like you are making progress anyway. Good news finding friends as well. Working isn't hard to get used to. I tend to ignore my inheritance and just work for something to do. He'll get over it. Still nobody I've found from my world."

Susan glanced at the three in the front of the room for a few seconds before continuing. "It did look like something was still weighing you down emotionally when I first came into the room."

Lily smiled slightly. "I'm certain."

She shook her head a little, but this woman clearly didn't know Sirius. He found plenty of things to do that didn't involve work, and the idea of working for a living was completely foreign to several generations of his family. "Well, not everyone thinks the same way," she said gently. "He's ... a bit of ... a character."

Lily shrugged to her last statement. "Nothing I'm really inclined to talk about, just now," she said with an edge of apology to her voice.

"Can't say as that I'm very impressed with 'charactetd', although Grandfather would probably say that's because I'm enough of a character myself. Still, he should take up his responsibilities."

"As you wish." Susan nodded. "I was just being nosey, I suppose."

"I'm sure he will," Lily replied, perhaps a touch defensively. But she didn't think Sirius would let them down. They just ... had to find a plave he could fit. She was all set to whisk him off to some mechanic where he could tinker with bikes all day, but she wasn't sure what the demand was like there. No matter. They had all weekend to look, and they could carry him for a bit if need be.

"It's understandable," Lily assured her quietly. "I'd likely be a bit nosy myself." Which was true enough, though she rarely pried unless the situation looked dire or it was a close friend that needed it pried out.

She glanced toward the others, listening to the conversation that drifted over. Maybe once Remus showed up, she'd recall her manners and go join them.

Neville rushed in, late as usual. He looked around, recognizing Galen and the red hair of Lily, and blushed. Might be best to avoid her- he'd almost said too much last time. And who was that next to her- something familiar about that man. There was a tall blonde who seemed to be angry, next to a woman who looked familiar- he might have seen her on the tee vee that Millie always had on. And the woman with the strange hair- was this everyone?

He wandered over to the food, making himself a plate- he'd never had peeza before, but it looked good. He snuck a glance at Lily eating her to make sure he was doing it right, then plopped himself down into a corner. He was here more to watch than anything- he was sure he wouldn't have anything to add, but he might as well come and see.

Susan had wandered away from the group at the front of the room. The other two women still seemed angry with Galen, even though he'd apologized, and it didn't look like much more would be done that night. She'd snagged a slice of pizza and a beer for herself and went to meet the newcomer in the back of the room. The other two seemed to interested in each other, which was probably a good thing if it cheered up Lily.

"Susan Sto Helit." She did a quick juggling act with her beer and pizza and a nearby table and held out her hand to the man. "Wizard of some sort or interested party?"

He looked up at the voice to find the woman with the strange hair in front of him. He tried to swallow the bite he'd been working on- it was all the cheese, it was all stringy and difficult to chew- and coughed a little before holding out his hand in return. "Neville. Longbottom, Neville Longbottom. Wizard. I suppose you're the same? Or, well a witch, maybe? Of some kind?" He blushed, wiping his face with the tips of his fingers, hoping he wasn't too out of sorts.

"Sorry." Susan chuckled. "I should be a waitress, asking you questions when you have your mouth full. Seems to be a universal constant if my home world and New York are any indication."

She listened to his accent; it was a lot like hers. Another English wizard? "Are you a wand-using wizard like Lily there and her friend? You seemed to know them."

She tilted her head to one side as she considered his words. "Not a witch as such. I know some witches, and I'm not like them. I'm... something else. A lot of it is inherited from my grandfather. I do use magic though. I suppose you could say I'm a witch of some sort, in the loosest sense."

Susan couldn't help it. This man was older than her usual student, but he was behaving like some of her younger charges. Without really thinking about it, she silently summoned a napkin from the tables in the front of the room. It flew through the air to her, and she caught it and handed to Neville. "Here, try this," she said as she passed him the napkin.

"It's fine." He smiled at her. "That's the way it is at home, too. No matter what, it's always when you put food in your mouth." He took a swig of the drink- beer, apparently. It was alright.

"I am. I know Lily- well, I know Lily's son, at home, and I've met Lily. I think I know the man beside her but I'm not sure how- he just looks familiar. You wouldn't happen to know his name?" Another English accent. That made him, Galen, and those from his world- was that significant?

He blushed when she handed him a napkin- he'd always been a little messy, and he'd managed to walk right past these. "How'd you do that without any incantation or wand? I've studied non-verbal magic before, and wandless, but not both. Rubbish at both of them, but I know how they work in theory." He laughed. "Or, well, you're not a witch. So why would my rules apply here?"

"Sorry. He came in when I was up front talking with the others. He went right back to talk with Lily and avoided the rest of us so I assume its someone she knows well."

Susan shrugged. The whole topic of wands went back to some of the sillier things she'd done when she was much younger.

"Oh. A wand? I got one of those years ago. I wanted to look different from the witches, more like a fairy godmother or something. Witches don't usually use wands where I'm from, its wizards that have staffs." She could tell it was her turn to blush as she remembered the many foolish things she'd done when she first admitted she was part of the supernatural world and filled in for her grandfather. "These days I use an umbrella if I use anything at all. Works just as well and keeps the rain off."

She thought about his question for a few moments. "I think because my magic is mostly inherited, linked to who I am, where I was born, its just something I use when I need to. I don't use spells or potions or mystic devices or the like. Its a good question, one I haven't given a lot of thought to because its just how I am, have always been. Did you have to go to some sort of a school to become a wizard? I never did."
