Another New York Night
Who: Galen and OPEN
Where: random streets
When: Wednesday night, Thursday morning
What: Galen is out taking the night air
Rating: TBD
Open

Galen had taken to leaving his small ship just after the fireworks show at the World's Fair. Most of the fairgoers left then, and he was just one more face in the crowd walking to the transit stops and parking lot. For daytime excursions, he had created what was called a 'business suit' in the style of the times. But at night, he preferred his dark clothes, and long, black, hooded coat.

Picking the pocket of a pickpocket at the fair had been almost too easy. The currency he could duplicate with minimal effort - changing the serial numbers would suffice - coins would take a bit more energy.

Energy. That was the problem. There was an electrical cable under the lake he could leach enough power from to run life support and duplicate simple items. Recharging his hyperdrive and making a time jump out of this place would take much more - a major power plant. The temporal jump that had brought him here had drained all his ship's systems. He had barely landed in the lake at Flushing Meadows on emergency batteries, drawn to the place by what he thought were other spacecraft parked nearby. There was precedence for making temporal hyperjumps, but it was extremely power intensive. If he ever wanted to get home, and to his own time, he was going to have to learn more about this era from the distant past, and find or build what he needed.

Which left him sitting in an all-night automat drinking bad coffee and reading the local newspapers. Actually printed on real paper... how quaint.

Bob slowed to a stop as the light turned red. He really ought to stop cruising in Queens-- he'd been up and down every street three times already and still no tail. Not even anyone with a decent enough car to challenge to a race.

Bob revved his engine a few times out of boredom and impatience. Sick of looking at a red light with no promises, he turned his attention to the automat he was stopped next to. He could see a bald guy sitting in the window with a paper and a cup of joe, and Bob noticed that every time he revved his engine, the bald man cringed slightly.

As the light turned green and Bob pulled away from the automat window, he thought to himself, This could be fun. Maybe I'll loop around the block again...

Galen couldn't help but wince at the noise from the internal combustion vehicle outside the automat. So much noise for so little power, he said to himself. Bit of a bother, that.

Finally the traffic control device lit a different color light and the obnoxious machine and its pilot moved off down the street.

Turning back to his newspapers, Galen considered more coffee, perhaps with the food-like substance they called blueberry pie. More preservatives than an Egyptian mummy, but decadently edible.
