Who: Donna Noble and Rose Tyler
When: Monday, July 18th
Where: Donna's room at the Welcome Center
What: Examining a robot (Companion reunion)
Rating: PG
Status: Closed, incomplete.

Donna played with the toy-sized robot the way little boys played with a toy soldier- she made it march, and leap off her small dresser, and army crawl though "mountains" on her quilt. Alright, so maybe she was a bit bored. Martha was out looking for a job, and her search for the Doctor remained futile and exhausting. There wasn't anything she could do on her day off that she hadn't done a thousand times before- she put the word out about the Doctor, she looked for a place to stay for her and Martha- and maybe Susan, if they could. Now there was nothing to do but wait for Rose Tyler to show up. She shook her head, marveling.

The Rose Tyler. She'd heard so much about the other woman she felt like she knew her already. If her Doctor would get here already, he'd be so pleased. She was pleased, on his behalf. Rose Tyler. She couldn't believe she was going to meet the woman who was lost. She smiled to herself, marching the robot over the doily on her dresser, forgetting to feel foolish until there was a knock on the door.

As interesting as the French dressed robot sounded, Rose wasn't sure she would be able to do that much to help Donna. Still, the whole thing sounded more entertaining than anything Rose could come up with on her own. And besides, she kind of wanted to meet Donna. The woman knew her. Or of her, anyway. Which was odd, yes. And a bit worrying. She was from the future. Her future. So she probably knew things. Things Rose herself didn't know, or wouldn't know, and it all made her wonder why they had never met if she really did know so much about her.

Which, Rose finally concluded as she arrived in front of the Welcome Center, was all just her being ridiculous. She couldn't think about stuff like that. It would drive her mad. That is, if 1964 didn't do it first. So she swallowed her doubts and set about finding Donna. A few wrong turns, which was mostly her getting distracted by the desire to explore, and she finally found the correct room.

“Hi,” greeted Rose once the door opened “Er – are you Donna?”

Donna turned, embarrassed, reflexively holding the robot behind her back. "Er, yes, hi. Rose Tyler?" She smiled, waving the other woman into the room. "Please, come in. It's nice to meet, you, actually." Donna winced. She needed to keep her fat mouth shut- it was bad enough she'd blabbed to Martha, she couldn't tell Rose- Rose before her Doctor, no less- what would happen.

"So, this is the robot- he's a lot smaller now than her was, thanks to Susan." She showed it to Rose, smiling nervously. "What do you think- anything you've seen before?"

She nodded. “You as well.” Then she broke into a grin of her own. Even just the accent was like finding a piece of home. “Brilliant, really. It's been ages since I've talked to someone that wasn't American or from the way distant future.” It would be nice to have a conversation where she didn't have to filter everything she said.

Rose took the robot and turned it over carefully in her hands so that she could examine it from various angles. She couldn't help but grin as she moved the limbs about a bit. It really was adorable. After a moment though, she sobered, suddenly remembering that it had, at one point, actually attacked Donna. “No. Sorry.” Her voice was full of regret. She really had wanted to help her out. “How'd he get down to this size anyway?” she asked. “Susan you mentioned. What'd she do?” It looked like it could be dead useful. Just going around and shrinking your enemies.

"Oh, you poor thing. Four months, stuck here? I can't imagine, at least I found Martha and Amy and- and you." God, look at her. Blonde, of course she was, and young and beautiful. And clever, too, to have lasted so long on her own in a strange country. No bloody wonder.

"I am from a bit in the future, from 2008. But not too far off." What was she supposed to say, what was allowed? She smiled as Rose did exactly what she'd done upon finding the robot toy-sized; it was just too tempting not to! "Yeah, my friend Susan. She's form another universe, she's uhm- I'm not really sure what she did, she used an umbrella and just shrunk it for me after she disabled it.

Rose shrugged. “Tis not so bad. Just a lot of their thinking is just so different.” She had a half of mind to say backwards, but she had learned her lesson from dealing with Gwyneth, even if she still had a hard time accepting it. “It takes some getting used to.” She gestured to the space around them. “You lot are lucky though. You've got this place. This wasn't even up when I got here.” The sudden appearance still felt a bit odd to Rose, but then again everything about their situation was odd.

“2008.” There was a question on the tip of her tongue, but she had no idea what the rules for a situation like this were. How much information was too much? But she couldn't ignore it and suddenly it just burst out. “And he's alright, yeah? He's . . .” She bit her lip and closed her eyes. “Sorry. That was . . . just generally. Not . . .” she trailed off, figuring it was probably best if she just changed the subject completely. “She used an umbrella. That's – uh – very Mary Poppins of her.”

"It is! I mean, I temp all the time in Chiswick, but here it's all I can do. My friend Martha, she's a doctor at home and she's useless in an office, I'm not sure what we're going to do with her." She couldn't imagine being stranded in New York with no money and no Welcome Center. That was awful.

"Yes." She avoided Rose's eyes awkwardly. "He's fine, he's grand, he's- well, he's the Doctor, you know. He's uhm- apparently there's also another version running about that's after either of us, so I suppose he's done very well for himself. He's got this woman with him, and her husband- the husband isn't here right now, I think. But he's alright." She fiddled with the robot, not looking up. She couldn't exactly tell Rose that the Doctor talked about her all the time- how he missed her, how he'd lost her. That was definitely breaking some big rules.

Rose winced in sympathy. “Tough break.” Rose really wasn't happy to be back in the shop, but at least she was used to it. She couldn't imagine putting all that effort into something and then just being told it was all for nothing. “Still. Doctor. She must be smart then. She probably picks things up quick enough.”

Right. Well, so much for easing that worry. At least he wasn't alone though. That was something. Course she had more questions now, but the way Donna refused to meet her eyes told her that her gut feeling coming in was right. “Well, good then,” she muttered. What else could she say? She followed Donna's line of sight. “Robots then.” She stared down at it. She could only make sense of the outfit. It was either stuck like the rest of them or had gotten history a bit wrong. Probably the first. Still, and she wasn't a history expert or anything, but the outfit was definitely pretty outdated. She fingered one of the sleeves. So what was it doing on robot from the future? “Do you think they were going for the real thing or just costume party?” She wasn't really sure where she was going with that, but hopefully it would help ease the awkward tension she had created.
