She was late again. It was no surprise, really. She had been late almost consistently for the past two weeks. But this morning was different, and she woke with a smile for the first time in those weeks. There it was, on her mantle. Beautiful, shimmering, and worth thousands. A sapphire necklace, with a stone the size of a pea, glistening in the early morning light.
"Oh, Isis," she murmured to the purring cat who rubbed against her shoulders, "It's going to be a lovely day,"
She felt no rush to dress. Oh, sure, Joan would have a fit about her being late again, but the men wouldn't care and likely wouldn't even notice, and those were the people that mattered, sadly. She stretched, wincing. She had taken a hard fall off of an awning a few nights ago, and her shoulder still hadn't quite recovered. She rubbed it gingerly, and turned to her closet.
"What do you think, Isis? Blue today? I'm in the mood for blue." The cat yawned languidly, and Selina laughed as she turned the sapphire over and over in her hand. It had belonged to some offshoot of the Astor family - a stern woman with no children, and Selina assumed it wouldn't be missed. And even so, well - no sense letting it go to waste. She would sell it later, though the temptation to wear it at least a few times was too much to resist. She placed it delicately in her jewelry box as she finished the last of her makeup.
She glanced at the clock - she was almost forty minutes late to work, now. Sighing heavily, she murmured to herself, "Please, angels above, let me sneak into the office without Joan noticing me,".
There was a flutter as she placed her hand on the front doorknob. She glanced out of her shoulder, and though she prided herself on never being taken by surprise, she couldn't help but shriek at the sight of a tall man standing in her living room.
She dropped her purse, and dove for one of her smaller whips, which she had tossed carelessly onto the couch the previous night. With a warning CRACK she shouted just as loud as she could, "How did you get in here?!"
