She was likely about to get some form of entertainment, too, and she didn't even need Fred and George's extendable ears to hear it!
Not when Locke was causing a ruckus, after all, with a gentleman from the police force who'd followed him all the way to the corner. He was taller and more readily built than the American and if he wanted to, he could just beat it and run but the policeman was young and determined. And based on Locke's recollection, he could get a hold of this situation without having to break a sweat.
And he did so by talking loudly: "Officer, I don't know what ring you're talking about!"
"Sir, please keep your voice down! A, and you may deny all you want, sir, but I saw it!" the law enforcer was trying to match Locke's volume except propriety told him otherwise so he sort of just half-succeeded on doing so while Locke gaped at him and stared at him with round eyes. "That lady had dropped it and you'd nicked it."
"Nicked it?" Locke laughed. "Officer, really now, do I look like I want some fancy lady ring? Do I?" His hands were pressed to his chest.
"...I don't know!" the poor guy said, looking a little flustered, his eyes shooting everywhere and meeting a couple of looks. Locke complimented this with giving everyone his own look of incredulity, even to that lady on the bench some steps away from him. Whatever have I done? he'd almost said to all of them. "But I swear I saw you take it and she was looking for it!"
"Well, that's her problem now-- fine! Fine, you know what," Locke spread his arms to the sides, "search me."
"Now, sir--"
"No, I'm serious, search me!" Locke went on. "Come on, I don't have all night for this!"
The policeman seemed to take his time on Locke's offer...but eventually he consented under one condition: "Why don't you come with me to the precinct, sir--"
"No, Officer, what's so different here-- aha, I know it! I know it, I know your plan," Locke appeared to be shaking with excitement as he jutted his finger to the space in-between the smaller man's eyes, "You're gonna take me to your precinct and sl-lip the ring in my pocket and make it seem like I'd stolen it all along! Isn't that right, isn't it?!" Locke would know how this works, given how many times he'd done the whole slipping thing, there was nothing to it, really...
