Entry tags:!log, cloud strife, welcome center millie

Who: Welcome Center Millie and OPEN
What: Just another day at the welcome center. Maybe you can squeeze some information out of Millie?
When: Sunday
Where: NYC Welcome Center
Warnings: None.

Her instructions for the day came every morning on one of the bulletin boards she was supposed to use to help newcomers find their families and friends. On Sunday morning Millie peered behind a picture of Steve McQueen and found the familiar scrawling handwriting of her boss standing out against yellow legal paper. Holding a steaming coffee mug in one hand, she sat down to look it over.

"Restock the machines." Did that yesterday.

"Make sure Miss. Garfield knows her four weeks are up." Obviously.

"Room 311 has a leaky faucet." I'll have to call that plumber who likes me.

"Be sure to have emergency supplies for Sat., July 9th." Oh dear, the Communists?

As if the paper could read her mind, a new note appeared almost instantly. "Not the Communists. Keep it to yourself," she muttered, reading directly from the paper. Millie took a sip of coffee and shook her head. If there was to be some sort of emergency she was glad for the advanced warning, but she would have liked to know what it was. She was responsible for thirty-six lives (the current occupancy rate at the Welcome Center) and she could only do her job properly if she knew what to expect, her boss' whims be damned!

"Darned, I mean darned," she mumbled. He tended to hear everything.

Millie settled into her chair and picked up a pencil and a pad of her own. She would have to order in the supplies needed for herself and thirty-six people. No, fifty, she decided. Just to be cautious. Who knew how many people she would be serving by then. Newcomers were arriving every day and she would have to be ready. She had written down four items when the front door of the center opened and she looked up.

"Welcome to New York! If you can make it here, you can make it anywhere!"

"Anywhere but home, that is," Cloud noted with only a barely detectable tone of cynicism.

Millie was fast becoming to be a regular sight as Cloud resumed his work in New York, the Strife Delivery Service. After all, a working motorbike and a few ads was all he needed to get going and the jobs that came in had been enough to pay for the rent and what little bills he had going. As was his habit, he left Fenrir to wait smack dab in front of the entrance, the many parcels and the bag of envelopes roped securely around her as he approached the help desk lady and brought out a clipboard from his arm.

"I need help locating a few residences," Cloud said and pointed to the addresses listed in a grid with a tiny check mark at the side. Millie should excuse his lack of education (or good handwriting), New York was too packed for his convenience and he was still getting the hang of things, after all.

Millie's smile didn't waver, even with the hint of sarcasm. "This is your home, obviously. Why else would you be living here?" Aside from being pulled in against his will by her mysterious employer, that was. She lifted her coffee mug to her lips, eager to get enough in while it was still steaming. When he came closer to the desk she peered over the rim of the mug and glanced down at his list. She did recognise him-- he'd been into the center more than a few times now and wasn't exactly a newcomer in need of a welcome anymore.

"You do realise that I'm supposed to be helping new people, not lost delivery men," she said, a touch of petulance in her voice. "Never mind though... what are you delivering today?"

Oh whatever.

Anyway, Cloud was still making his way around the city. Doesn't that still make him new? Besides, she wasn't around when he needed him or when he really was still new so call it a postponed demand of assistance. "Packages," he said with a vague nod to the back where Fenrir waited patiently before he slipped out a peeking envelope from his clipboard and held it up to Millie. "And a letter. From your boyfriend." That is to say, the plumber. It reeked of flowers and ethyl alcohol, too. He handed it to her.

She could have retorted, but Millie took the letter silently and agreeably. She tore it open with the side of her thumb and let her eyes scan the handwritten note quickly. "Good. We can get that faucet fixed." Just had to pay the bill for the last one, but she was sure her employer wouldn't mind.

Carefully, she folded up the note and placed it in one of the small drawers in her desk. When she looked back at Cloud she smiled. "He's not my boyfriend. I don't have a boyfriend." When he gestured to the bike, Millie grinned. It was like nothing she'd ever seen before. "Nice. But it's not fast enough to get you out of the city, is it?"

Wooow, captain obvious much?

Cloud's face remained flat and vacant but he wasn't going to lie, what Millie said had done a good job planting a small bud of ire well within his chest. Not only had she mentioned that Fenrir wasn't fast enough anymore (although he'll have to wait after the holiday...whatever it is, to see if Rex can do something about that and he really hoped that he would), she also had the grace of reminding him that he was stuck and there was nothing he could do about it.

"Not until you can tell me how fast I have to go," he said, staring straight into her eyes, looking unimpressed.
