There weren't many times in James' life where he had felt genuinely helpless. He was usually brimming, no - overflowing with self confidence, and the last time he could recall feeling so powerless was when he was twelve years old. Along with Sirius and Peter, they had discovered Remus' secret, and before they had formulated the plan to become animagi, James had thought one of his closest friends was doomed to a life of suffering alone.
James was older now. A much more powerful wizard than the twelve year old boy who brewed polyjuice to hide Remus' monthly disappearances and chose to pursue dangerously complicated magic in secret in order to keep Moony company. But he felt just as helpless as he did as a child; Lily was at home, tending to very ill parents who couldn't be cured by muggle or magical means. He hated being apart from her, hated that she had to go through the ordeal practically alone, and wanted to do something special for her birthday.
Which was how he came to the decision to gift her a pensieve. They were incredibly rare, incredibly expensive, but it didn't matter. If it made Lily smile for even a moment, then it was worth all the effort that had gone into obtaining it. Money had never been an issue, but time and effort were things that James only exerted for people and causes that were dear to his heart.
The pensieve was a shallow bowl made of stone. James had the outside carved with twisting vines and lilies, and in amongst them were a doe and stag, testament to their twin patronuses and close bond. The doe had emerald eyes, whilst the flowers were embellished with garnets, her birth stone, in all their possible colours; yellow, orange, fiery red and a deep purple. The rim was lined with ancient runes, and the bowl was filled with a shimmering, mirror-like liquid. The wooden crate it was delivered in also contains the following note.
Happy birthday Lils,
I know your mum and dad missed out on a lot, not being able to visit you at Hogwarts and only seeing the place in photos. I thought you might want to show them some of it.
All your mates have put in their favourite memories of you, just think of a time or place with them whilst stirring the surface with the tip of your wand, and it will come up.
You can also put in your own to show your parents, just think of what you want whilst holding your wand to your temple and it will draw out a copy of the memory for you.
And if there's anything your mum or dad wants to share with you, it's safe for you to copy their memories too - I triple checked that the charm wouldn't harm muggles.
Love you,
James xoxo
