Who: Delia Avery and whoever wants to join in!
What: Delia is waking up in St.Mungo's after being pulled through the tear.
When: 10 January 2000
Rating/Status: Low/In-Progress

It was so...dark. The weight of it throbbed behind her eyes, painful with each beat. harder and harder until it seemed unbearable. Where had the quiet gone? The stillness had been a peace beyond the fear. Why could her body not let her go? Her mind already wandered, trying hard to escape the confines of its inferior cage. And now the pounding had returned. The horrible, insistent pounding, and for a moment she wanted to yell out for it to stop and let her be. Why couldn't it just leave her to the silence?

And then there was light, though she couldn't open her eyes yet to find it. It streamed through the darkness, and she wanted to blink it away, and go back to sleep. She was so very tired. But nothing would go away again, and the more she willed it to, the more intrusive it became. The voices floated in and out like lost souls in a storm. Like demons come to carry her away. She couldn't make out the words, but she wanted to find them. They were so thick in the fog of her mind, but slowly she was reaching out. If only she could just...grab them.

On the bed Delia's fingertips twitched, contracting into a fist and her lips parted in a hoarse whimper. It was the first sign of true response, and somewhere in the rest of the haze monitors skipped beats, speeding up to the same pace of the horrible pounding. The tempo of her life seemed crazed, and it pushed against her chest with such anxiety that the tiny girl sat straight in the bed with a gasping pant, eyes wild and frightened as they shot around and squinted at the unfamiliar, cold room, too bright for her tired eyes still.

Lily had only been working at St. Mungo's for a few days when they rushed in the unconscious girl. She'd fallen through the rip in the Department of Mysteries that way, and they had rushed her in to get medical attention. An examination showed she had been suffocating when she'd come through, and it was very lucky indeed that she had. She'd remained unconscious for more than a day when Lily had come in to check on her and monitor any progress she might have made. A gasping sound alerted her to the girl's awakened state.

"Hold on love, you're alright," she said in a soothing voice, the one she usually reserved for her crying children, as she smoothed her dark hair away from her pale face. "You're at St. Mungo's, it's alright, I promise." She turned and called out to the hall for the Healer in charge of her to come in. "What's your name, sweetie?" She asked while the Healer came in to make sure her vitals were normal.

All the voices...They echoed in her ears, reverberating oddly until each strand melded back into one single tone, and she turned her head toward it, trying to make out the words coming from the lady's mouth. None of it made any sense, and Delia shook her dark head as if to clear the cloudy haze from it, but only found the world spinning uncontrollably and lifted her fingertips to her temple. "I..." St.Mungo's...So she was alive. But who had pulled her from the ground? Where was Max? A surge of fear rose in her throat, choking her words as she stumbled over them with frantic confusion. "Who...I was dying. I was...it was dark...Where's Max?"

Would he come back for her? They had to know it was him. She had to tell them. But it was all just too much, and she was so...so tired. "Delia...My name is Delia. Where is my mother? Why isn't she here? She wouldn't leave me alone!" They should know her name! Why was no one there?

Lily could only assume that Max was a family member, a brother perhaps, possibly even a boyfriend, or the person she was last with, whom, since no one else had come with her, would have suffered the terrible fate of suffocation.

"Calm down, Delia; your mother isn't here. Can you tell me your last name and age? We'll try and get someone up here for you as soon as we can, and in the meantime, as soon as we make sure you're alright, I'll tell you everything we know about what's happened to you." She was trying to be as calm and comforting as possible, but the fear in the girl was impossible to ignore. Lily wondered what and who had put this frail thing in a position she could have died in.

"But I know what's happened to me..." It was so frustrating. It seemed as though the whole world was so far away and she couldn't quite grasp at it. Even her legs were so very sluggish and heavy as she tried to move them beneath her only to sit back heavily again. She felt very much like crying, but Delia so rarely ever cried, and especially not in the presence of others. No matter how kind they seemed to be.

"Avery. I'm...I'm 17. October 30th. Please...Why am I here alone?" She paused, trying to regain her composure. Slowly but surely it was seeping back into her drained body. "I was dying...I was buried in that awful box. Please tell me...who found me? Who brought me from the ground?"

Lily glanced at the Healer trying to get her vitals. Delia's restlessness, though understandable, was making it rather difficult to get them. She sat in the chair next to the bed and continued to try to calm the girl down, all the while her blood boiling at who would do such a thing to a child. She was not too much younger than Lily herself, but she looked so small and frail that it was hard to believe she was 17.

"If you'll calm down and let the Healer take your vitals, Delia, I'll tell you how you got here, but please just lie still for a few minutes. Nothing's going to happen to you here, I promise." And it was a promise Lily would do everything to keep.
