Be absolute for death; either death or life shall thereby be the sweeter.
People came but they never stayed. His mother came and went, she was the only returner. His father stayed the longest but still left way too soon. There were other families and children in the church but they didn't even count as minor characters in the story of his life. There were some he was glad didn't say, like the man from Ulm Street, but there were others he missed like Jett and those he wished he had been able to keep around long enough to miss like Grace and Stella. He was tired of it and Sialia Sialis was just waiting to be buried, even if Felix had held little hope in him to begin with.
He crouched on the sidewalk against the stained side of a green dumpster where the paint had begun to peel away his crippled hand resting by the knuckled on the wet pavement as he traced the marker lines he'd drawn down his arm. "Why did you do all this for me, he asked? I don't deserve it. I've never done anything for you," he muttered, going over the lines again. And again. "You have been my friend, replied Charlotte. That in itself is a tremendous thing." A tremendous thing. The script looked so black against the pallor of his limb. Lowering the marker tip he looked up and around the corner of alleyway and down the street where he could see Mouse, carrying on about her own business as if she didn't even know he was there.
If he wanted one of them to stay he knew he would have to do something about it. A complaint met with inaction wasn't something you were allowed to whine about because you hadn't done anything to remedy the situation. He hadn't had to read that to know it. And he finally planned on doing something. It wasn't as difficult as he'd thought it would be to come up with a plan, the details of it were pulled right from Denial herself. He wasn't sure it would work but he knew that he had to try and he knew it would be his only chance.
His one opportunity for a tremendous thing.
