Nothing Gold Can Stay
Title: Nothing Gold Can Stay

Summary: Severus didn't fully consider the consequences of his plan.
A/N: Written for Severus Sighs' Third Anniversary, using the "1001 Ways to Fake Your Own Death" prompt. Credit for the title goes to Robert Frost, who wrote one of my favorite poems by the same name. It fit, I thought. Also don't be fooled by the rating or lack of warnings - this is not a happy drabble. ;)

Severus felt his heart start beating, his lungs filled with air as his body shook. Nerve endings fired to life, his eyes flew open, and he knew he was alive. He quickly put the last part of his plan into motion - disappearing.

Everything went perfectly.

Except...

He was cut off from everyone he'd ever known. He couldn't resist watching them after the war. They rebuilt what war had destroyed, mourning mixed with relief and joy as they fell in love, and lived their lives. Everyone moved on.

Except Severus.

He couldn't go back.

He was alive with nothing to live for.

	Yeah, my Severus tends to be pessimistic and doesn't think he deserves a second chance. I thought about writing a sequel drabble to this one where Harry or someone finds Severus and brings him out of hiding. 	Ah, this was sad. Really depressing actually, but I can so see that happening. He didn't have anyone or anything except his mission and once that is over ... boring times ahead. If he was more optimistic, he could find life and happiness elsewhere, but I always felt he was stuck in his past. (Reply to this) (Thread)

	Exactly. All his motivation and purpose in life (in canon, anyway) were rooted in his past. Once that's gone, there's really nothing left for him. So, definitely depressing. Thanks for commenting. :) LD7 (Reply to this) (Parent)

	OOh, I love it! There are so many, "What would Severus do were he still aive after DH2" scenarios, but him living with ... this. Is perfect. After 17 years, he had yet to get over Lily. Exactly. Even though his life sucked, it was all he knew, and I can't imagine him moving on quickly...or at all, really.

You're good for my ego (which really doesn't need much help - it's fairly healthy as it is *grin*) but darling, you don't need to drabble like me. I love your drabbles.
