Young Bella and Roddy - a Blast From The Past
Who: Bellatrix Black and Rodolphus Lestrange
When: summer after their first year at Hogwarts
Where: home, in Northumberland
Rating: tba, but probably high, consider the source

The first year at Hogwarts was over, and what a year it had been, more exciting than Rodolphus had ever thought possible. So many firsts, so many possibilities. Even at his young age, he knew that magic was a force in his life to be reckoned with, it had been pretty much installed in him since birth. It was and would remain his life, and this he knew. He had been sorted into the house where all great dark wizards came from, taking his place among his peers.

And shalt be what thou art promised...

Prophetic words indeed.

Best of all, he had Bellatrix there by his side to celebrate. Bella, his best friend and constant companion. There was no one like her in the whole world, and he appreciated her uniqueness greatly. He spent as much time with her at school as he could, and back at home, it was only natural that they be together. He had taught her how to kill, and they had gloried in the spilling of blood, sharing in the bloodlust that consumed them more often than that, a preoccupation that transcended everything else, as well as their shared interest in the blade - Rodolphus adored her for that, of course. There were no other females like her, anywhere.

It was a bright summer day, but they were in the woods between their homes. Rodolphus was annoyed and aggravated, his nose out of joint at an imagined slight by a house elf, and he was using the knife to carve up the corpse of a small squirrel they had killed, deftly eviscerating it - either one could perform an autopsy at a moment's notice, they were so skilled at it. He squatted over the body, mumbling oaths of great profanity, his face flushed in his irateness.

Killing me Softly, Roberta Flack

“So you hope I know, but I only see a little woman worried about her soiled dress!” Despite the fact that clearly Rodolphus was not wearing a dress and it was, instead, Bellatrix. But it was a game she would not easily give up. Not until he spouted out so evil as a word like “girl”. If she were to accept anything demeaning, woman would settle but girl? Her eyes narrowed, as her mood easily shifted into something much less playful.

“I don’t mind the blood, but you are only annoying me.” She wouldn’t retaliate as she would with Narcissa, suggesting far more respect for Rodolphus than her weak, youngest sister. Using her knee, she shoved him away from her and stood. No other words were spoken, as she ruffled the leaves out of her hair and retrieved her wand. “I’m going home.”

He picked up his wand from where he had laid it during the murder of the house elf, torn between a scathing rebuttal and simple silence, the desire to simply run back to the house strong within him.

But something wiser prevented him from doing so, as he fairly bit his tongue to respond to her last words. "Go on, get cleaned up, and meet me at my house, we can still my mum to take us out, I know we can...."

He moved closer to where she stood, leaned in close enough so that she and she alone could hear him - only for her would he play this part, although he would do it well - "I'm sorry," he whispered, before he turned and walked back in the direction of Lestrange Manor, never stopping or turning around lest she see the uncertainty in him.
