The Doctor: Stress (and Hello!)
If the ship had landed a bit closer or the customers inside the café been a little less chatty, they might have heard the distinctive whirling-wheezing-grinding sound, warning them of Margate’s newest arrival. As it is, the thin man in the brown overcoat bursting into the café and stopping abruptly a few paces into the room comes as a surprise. The stranger glances around the space, eyes narrowing, adjusting to the change from the sunny seaside to the interior lighting.

"No..." he scoffs, heavy with skepticism, before turning around and jogging back out the door as quickly as his trainers will carry him.

Only moments pass before he re-enters the café.

"It can't be..." he murmurs and, squinting again, pulls a set of glasses from an inside suit pocket, puts them on, pushing them up the bridge of his nose with his index finger.

He wanders further into the café this time, roaming and examining the entryway, the counter, the tables. "Am I...?" he murmurs. He looks around and grabs a cup of coffee practically from the lips of the poor individual who happened to be closest to him. He sniffs the contents of the mug first, then sticks his fingertip into the beverage and licks the liquid off. He grimaces as he swallows, but the grimace quickly changes into a grin. "Oh, I am. I am in Margate again. Brilliant! Just brilliant! I had forgotten all about this place!"

He frowns suddenly and sinks into a chair, continuing his conversation with himself. "But how could I have forgotten...... it's like... it's like, like there's a perception filter on the whole town!" He snaps his fingers. "Yes, that’s exactly what it’s like! When you're here, you're aware of the place, and when you're not, you don't even think about it."

He runs a hand through his hair, musing, "But why would anyone put a perception filter on a Margate...? That would take so much energy... and what would the point be..." He trails off, hand midway through his hair, eyes widening, suddenly aware of the crowd of people sitting in the café.

A wide smile spreads across his face, which, in combination with his now bigger-than-ever hair results in a slightly-crazed look. "Oh, hello!!! Now, who do we have here? Who is present tonight?" He gets to his feet and begins circulating through the tables.

"Ahh, Caprica Six!" he calls out, walking over to the blonde. He winks and smiles, though the smile doesn’t quite extend to his eyes. "You're looking lovely as always!" He turns and his gaze comes to rest on a dark-haired man. "Alex Krycek!" he exclaims. "Ha! No one’s killed you yet! Amazing!"

He crosses the room, meandering among the tables. "And Professor McGonagall! Hello, there!" He smiles, fondly. "Oh, the mug you gave me -- now that I think about it, still have it! And I'll have you know -- it survived a trip to the end of the Earth."

"Survived a few different endings, actually, come to think of it," he murmurs, already walking away from her.

"And Ianto Jones!" He stares at Ianto for a moment, before saying quite seriously, "I have so much to catch up on with you."

"Say, is Holmes around…" he abruptly asks no one in particular. "Had another edition for him to sign…" he murmurs, looking around the crowd. "Ah-ha! There is he is! Hello!" He waves, then stands at the front of the room, surveying the group. "Look at all of you! A few new faces, but looks like the whole gang's here! It's like... a reunion! Well, a reunion for me... Unless, you've all left, too, and somehow we've all just happened to return, right now, this very day. Say, what day is it?" He grins, positively gleeful. "Do we still have topics to discuss? I loved those chats! Is there a discussion topic right now, hmm?"

"Ah, what’s that? Stress?" he asks as someone calls out from the back. "Ah, stress!" He grins with realization, commenting, "That's what we were talking about when I left! See! I told you I'd be back in ten minutes! Same as ever!"

"So, stress..." He thinks a moment, brow furrowed. "Well, a friend of mine claims I insult other species when I'm stressed. Oh, and I'm rude. Sometimes I get more rude when I'm stressed. Things like 'My, doesn't that dress just make her look like a Krillitane.' and 'Well, how stupid could they possibly be?' just sort of fall out of my mouth. I honestly don't mean to say them and I know, I know, it's probably not the best coping mechanism, it just sorta… happens…" he trails off, smile fading, finally noticing some blank stares and a few of the customers regarding him apprehensively.

"What?"

His expression melts into one of confusion and he repeats the question, more defensively this time. "What?"

His eyes widen and he shakes his head rapidly. "Oh! Oh, no, no, no! No, don't worry! Sorry for the confusion. Just got a new face," he says with a grin. "Bit of trouble with absorbing the time vortex. Well, my friend, Rose, had some trouble with the time vortex, then I..." he breaks off, face falling. "But she's gone..." He sighs, wearily. "It's a long story."

"But I promise, it's really me. I just regenerated recently."

"Still not ginger..." he muses. "Though I did just save a red-haired bride... Well, saved her and Christmas… and the Earth..." he adds off-handedly. "But look, even though I have changed, I'm still me."

He grins again, his tone gentler now, "I'm still just 'The Doctor.'"

He cradles the glass to himself, watches the amber liquid swirl around. "Shit." He looks up, eyes raw and wide and just shakes his head, shrugs. "As I said, nevermind," bitter laugh.

*shrugs, hangs his head for a moment, before looking back up at Alex*
*sighs*
You would think, being as old as I am, that I would have some brilliant advice for what to do in such a situation. But, I'm sorry... I really don't.

He shrugs. "What's to do- you cut your losses and move on, I guess." He drinks down the Bourbon in one gulp. It burns.

Moving on... Always a good plan in my book.

He shrugs. "Any experiences there?" At his age, he must have left people behind every now and then.

Plenty. *quieter* Not sure I learned that much from them though.
*pauses a moment, then continues, contemplative*
Tell me Krycek, which do you think is better -- being the...leave-er or the leave-ee?

He shrugs. "Very human, that," he teases with a smile, "the ability to keep on repeating mistakes."

"Couldn't say, I was both now, usually I am the leave-er though." He stares at the table. "It's easier being the leaver, you control the moment, the manner, the time. Not sure if it's any better though."

*snorts*
Trust me -- that ability isn't exclusive to humans.

*nods*
Yeah... I've been on both sides of the fence... *shrugs* *quiet, thoughtful* Anyway you look at it, you still end up alone.

He rolls his eyes. "You would know, I suppose." He's not sure aliens are capable of any kind of manner of speech and thought, and therefore, knowledge and learning.

"Makes a difference though if you choose it or if it knocks you out cold. Trust me, it makes a difference."

Yes, I would.... Being that I'm an alien and just admitted I make mistakes and don't always learn from them...

*quietly*
Yeah...
*grim*
Of course, sometimes fate intervenes. Usually when you're left alone because of fate... no one's happy.

"You always NEED to be right, don't you?" He rolls his eyes. "Tell me of a mistake or two? Just for entertainment's sake?"

Eyebrows rise. "Fate?" It sounds mocking. "There is no fate. Only actions and reactions."

*coolly*
Fine. Here's one: I abandon people. Have quite a history of it -- my granddaughter and some of my friends. *looks downward* Ran into one the friends I'd left behind recently and sorta...got her ideas on what it was like to be dropped off and left behind... But it was too late to learn at that point -- I'd already done it again, to another friend. *shrugs, trying to appear indifferent* Don't know if I'll learn from it in the future or not.

*shrugs, tips his head side-to-side thinking*
Alright, maybe fate wasn't the best word. More like...circumstances beyond one's control. *quieter* Like... death...*clears his throat*...for example.

"I'm no shrink, you know, can't give you absolution or some shit. Do you do it because there is nothing else to do or just because it strikes your fancy or don't you even think about it?" Another shrug, off-hand. "Sounds lonely."

"Death? Losing people to ... death? Seems a little natural- well, not to you, but to the rest of the world. One of those things you know you'll have to deal with, as a human."

*a bit cool*
Look, you asked for mistake I made -- there's one. I'm not looking for absolution or to be analyzed. *shrugs, uncomfortable* I left them, because like you said, it is easier to be the one doing the leaving than it was to be left. *quieter* And a few other reasons, too...

*sighs, somewhat pleading*
Krycek... for the last time... I am not a human. Honestly, I just spent Christmas Eve with a woman who kept calling me a Martian and I'm not a Martian either. I'm a Time Lord. Understand? Time Lord. Native of Gallifrey. Not Earth! Not Mars! Not anywhere in this solar system!! *huffs slightly* Anyway, my point was, sometimes there are situation in which neither party chooses to leave, the...leaving, the separation, is just forced upon them.

"So you rate that as a higher mistake to share than the whole 'destroyed my entire race, and another one, because I thought it good? Impressive set of morals there, David." That is only a sidenote. He cocks his head, "just how much of a masochist are you, that you get off on them leaving and stay behind with your heart broken? Has there never been anyone you just wanted desperately to remain there?"

He rolls his eyes, "I got it. But the way you hang out here one could think that you would have acquired some standards of common human interactions." He snorts, "like me, the posterboy for appropriate interactions." Happy smile but he shrugs. "I don't buy into it. Separation doesn't just happen. Never."

*eyes flash, angry*
That wasn't a mistake. I did what I had to do.
*jaw tenses*
And I don't get off on leaving people behind. Of course, there have been people I wanted to stay. *takes a deep breath* But the fact remains -- I don't die, Krycek. I regenerate. Humans die. I'm going to be alone one way or another, sooner or later.

*rolls his eyes*
Common human interactions... *serious* Krycek, the world is a bigger place than just Earth. There are some things that are common across many planets, solar systems, the entire universe.
*shakes his head, looking sad*
It does just happen. At least for me it has.

"There are always alternatives so who gave you the power to DECIDE, eh? Fancy playing God a little too much, don't you. Gives you a thrill to press the little red button and watch it all explode? Erase all past memories of you, all mistakes since no-one lives to tell them. Yeah, convenient, that."

The smirk is bit too pronounced. "That scared, are you."

He rolls his eyes too. "Whatever. It- doesn't matter what's out there when you are down here. When it doesn't touch you there are still local rules and regulations to obey."

"Tend to get people killed, in other words. Since with all your superiority, 'oh I am a Time Lord', they are your responsibility, aren't they, all these ickle humans- your fault then if FATE happens to them just as they happen to be with you. You can't call it coincidence. Never would have happened if you hadn't picked them up."

*glares*
Shut. Up.
*darkly*
Sometimes the only choices you have are bad and worse.

*rolls his eyes again*
Rules and regulations? *snorts, grins a bit* I never bothered obeying most of Gallifrey's -- why would I start now?

*opens his mouth, then closes it*
*quietly*
I know that.
*adds quickly*
And I warn them. I tell them, traveling with me is dangerous. And they have the choice -- stay or see the world.
*glumly*
And I... *trails off*
*quiet*
Never mind.
*looks to Alex quickly*
What would you do? If I gave you the choice -- stay or travel?

Apologies for the delays in replies!

He can't suppress the dry chuckle at that. "Well you got that one right, mastermind." Even as he likes to think that the bad decisions are not that bad, not really.

Eyebrows raise, delighted smirk on his face, "Oh, a rebel! How- ...cute-" He reaches over to pinch David's cheek, and just pats them instead.

"You are an asshole." He shakes his head. "You offer them a choice but they have no fucking idea what they are agreeing to, and you think that's ... right?! Fuck! Knight in shining armor, are you."

He looks at him, eyes losing their mischievous spark and turn serious. "Stay. I'm not suicidal. Or a fool." God knows Mulder was both and would be gone in a heartbeat.

No problem

Of course I have it right.

*twists his face away when Alex pats his cheeks, highly annoyed*
Oh, stop it.

*expression hardens*
*looks downward, quiet*
Rose saw how dangerous it was before I asked if she wanted to come along. She may not have known the magnitude of the danger... *quieter* But she had some idea.

*nods, equally serious, suddenly somewhat at a loss for words*
Well, then... I guess you're just clever.

"Of course-" he shakes his head, gives a small shrug, getting to be indifferent.

The smirk is fixed to his face even though he does not exactly feel it and drops his hand. "You don't have a problem with people touching you, do you? Some long lost childhood trauma?"

"As much of an idea as you had?" His eyebrows are raised, his voice low- It's not even meant to be provocative.

He snort, amused but not, and shakes his head. "Maybe- or maybe not. Would you- situations reversed, hypothetically speaking? Leasve what you have or not have behind for an adventure?" he looks at him, laughs, "oh you probably would."

But part of him still knew of that alien threat, the oil, and- he wouldn't just escape that disaster and leave it to fester- even stuck in Margate now, it was never far from his mind.

No, no problem with people touching me. I'm just sorta...picky...about who does. And really... *wrinkles his nose slightly* ...who pats cheeks other than like... great aunts or grandmothers or the like, hmmm?

*flatly, trying to be evasive*
I had no idea exactly what sort of trouble we'd be in...

*small smile, gently*
Krycek, that's how I live -- stop in a place, a time, meet people, have an adventure, solve a problem, save some people, save someone, move on... *quite serious* That's been my life for centuries now. So, yes... I'd go.

He grins. "In other words you WANT me to feel insulted and rejected." He tries a big eyed puppy-dog expression.

He snorts. "Right-" looks up, "well that's alright then of course." And drops the topic with the message that he can see through the flimsy evasion.

He grins, "no but- you realize,- would you do it if there roles were entirely exchanged? If coming someone meant leaving your old life, leaving everything you know- in your case, leaving the flying about, solving problems and saving people and settling into life here?"

He idly plays with one of the glasses on the table. "Ever found someone you didn't want to save?"

As if you don't try for the same thing!

*sighs, snappish*
Alright, yes, likely I had a better idea about the amount of danger... *a bit desperate* But you always have to hope for the best, right?

*firmly*
If I had to, I would. I have, in fact.

I try not to think of it like that. People play roles in history, some good, some bad, but all are important.

He raises an eyebrow at him. "Me, I am just making conversation, didn't you realize." And it's interesting enough to make it for someone who apparently will never be up for a fuck.

He stares at the cup gloomily. "Gets lonely just doing it on your own then, huh?- and" he holds up his hand, "I did not mean it like that." He shrugs. "You endanger people you just said you want to keep safe. You tell me if hope is enough there."

"Really?" He shrugs. "Must have been hard not flying about."

He shakes his head. "Some don't deserve to live, trust me."
