The Doctor: Stress (and Hello!)
If the ship had landed a bit closer or the customers inside the café been a little less chatty, they might have heard the distinctive whirling-wheezing-grinding sound, warning them of Margate’s newest arrival. As it is, the thin man in the brown overcoat bursting into the café and stopping abruptly a few paces into the room comes as a surprise. The stranger glances around the space, eyes narrowing, adjusting to the change from the sunny seaside to the interior lighting.

"No..." he scoffs, heavy with skepticism, before turning around and jogging back out the door as quickly as his trainers will carry him.

Only moments pass before he re-enters the café.

"It can't be..." he murmurs and, squinting again, pulls a set of glasses from an inside suit pocket, puts them on, pushing them up the bridge of his nose with his index finger.

He wanders further into the café this time, roaming and examining the entryway, the counter, the tables. "Am I...?" he murmurs. He looks around and grabs a cup of coffee practically from the lips of the poor individual who happened to be closest to him. He sniffs the contents of the mug first, then sticks his fingertip into the beverage and licks the liquid off. He grimaces as he swallows, but the grimace quickly changes into a grin. "Oh, I am. I am in Margate again. Brilliant! Just brilliant! I had forgotten all about this place!"

He frowns suddenly and sinks into a chair, continuing his conversation with himself. "But how could I have forgotten...... it's like... it's like, like there's a perception filter on the whole town!" He snaps his fingers. "Yes, that’s exactly what it’s like! When you're here, you're aware of the place, and when you're not, you don't even think about it."

He runs a hand through his hair, musing, "But why would anyone put a perception filter on a Margate...? That would take so much energy... and what would the point be..." He trails off, hand midway through his hair, eyes widening, suddenly aware of the crowd of people sitting in the café.

A wide smile spreads across his face, which, in combination with his now bigger-than-ever hair results in a slightly-crazed look. "Oh, hello!!! Now, who do we have here? Who is present tonight?" He gets to his feet and begins circulating through the tables.

"Ahh, Caprica Six!" he calls out, walking over to the blonde. He winks and smiles, though the smile doesn’t quite extend to his eyes. "You're looking lovely as always!" He turns and his gaze comes to rest on a dark-haired man. "Alex Krycek!" he exclaims. "Ha! No one’s killed you yet! Amazing!"

He crosses the room, meandering among the tables. "And Professor McGonagall! Hello, there!" He smiles, fondly. "Oh, the mug you gave me -- now that I think about it, still have it! And I'll have you know -- it survived a trip to the end of the Earth."

"Survived a few different endings, actually, come to think of it," he murmurs, already walking away from her.

"And Ianto Jones!" He stares at Ianto for a moment, before saying quite seriously, "I have so much to catch up on with you."

"Say, is Holmes around…" he abruptly asks no one in particular. "Had another edition for him to sign…" he murmurs, looking around the crowd. "Ah-ha! There is he is! Hello!" He waves, then stands at the front of the room, surveying the group. "Look at all of you! A few new faces, but looks like the whole gang's here! It's like... a reunion! Well, a reunion for me... Unless, you've all left, too, and somehow we've all just happened to return, right now, this very day. Say, what day is it?" He grins, positively gleeful. "Do we still have topics to discuss? I loved those chats! Is there a discussion topic right now, hmm?"

"Ah, what’s that? Stress?" he asks as someone calls out from the back. "Ah, stress!" He grins with realization, commenting, "That's what we were talking about when I left! See! I told you I'd be back in ten minutes! Same as ever!"

"So, stress..." He thinks a moment, brow furrowed. "Well, a friend of mine claims I insult other species when I'm stressed. Oh, and I'm rude. Sometimes I get more rude when I'm stressed. Things like 'My, doesn't that dress just make her look like a Krillitane.' and 'Well, how stupid could they possibly be?' just sort of fall out of my mouth. I honestly don't mean to say them and I know, I know, it's probably not the best coping mechanism, it just sorta… happens…" he trails off, smile fading, finally noticing some blank stares and a few of the customers regarding him apprehensively.

"What?"

His expression melts into one of confusion and he repeats the question, more defensively this time. "What?"

His eyes widen and he shakes his head rapidly. "Oh! Oh, no, no, no! No, don't worry! Sorry for the confusion. Just got a new face," he says with a grin. "Bit of trouble with absorbing the time vortex. Well, my friend, Rose, had some trouble with the time vortex, then I..." he breaks off, face falling. "But she's gone..." He sighs, wearily. "It's a long story."

"But I promise, it's really me. I just regenerated recently."

"Still not ginger..." he muses. "Though I did just save a red-haired bride... Well, saved her and Christmas… and the Earth..." he adds off-handedly. "But look, even though I have changed, I'm still me."

He grins again, his tone gentler now, "I'm still just 'The Doctor.'"

*as gently as he can*

But we don't have anything else to compare it to really. Time travel is impossible for us. *muses* Though I've always wondered about Leonardo Da Vinci.

*raises an eyebrow*

Five billion twenty three? Rather a long wait isn't it? And it's in this dimension? *he's still thinking about Planet of the Apes

*Q's ears prick up*

Novikov? *he frowns* Something about...high dimensional manifolds right?

*holds up his hands*

Sorry! Sorry! I forgot. Why don't you then? Ask him what 'grok' really means.

Maybe that's why it gave me a headache. Though I thought he handled it better than most.

*surprised*

You watch movies?! *really surprised* They've finally done another one?! YAY! *he pumps his fist* Don't you dare tell me anything about it! *glares*

*shortly*

Defense Against Dark Arts. At Hogwarts.

YAY! Another convert! Truly though, it gave me a bit of a headache trying to follow. :D

*grumbles a bit*
I suppose...
*grins*
Ah, Leo... *fondly* Now he was brilliant.

*blinks, brow furrows as though the idea of waiting is a bit silly*
Who's going to wait when you have a time machine?! Traveling to five billion twenty-three is just like... *thinks a moment* ...like popping out for groceries at the corner store. *reconsiders* Well... maybe a store a little further down the road. *adds quickly* But all the same -- not a long trip!

*eyes widen, waves his hands*
Oh, no, no! Sorry. Sorry, Igor Novikov, not Sergei. See Igor has this idea, the Self-Consistency Principle. Basically, he theorizes that since you exist in the future, the probability of going back into the past and committing autoinfanticide is, well, pretty much zero.

*laughs*
I should ask him that... *muses* Maybe he just couldn't decide. *more serious* I agree though, he definitely handled it better than most. Heinlein -- brilliant mind right there.

*slightly indignant*
What? I would never spoil you for it! What sort of person do you think I am?! *grumbling a bit* And of course I watch movies!
*suddenly chuckles, grins, gleeful*
But let me tell you, when you have a time machine -- it takes "On Demand" to a whole other level!

*blinks*
*quiet*
Oh... So you're one of those wizards then, hmm?

:-) Well, to be honest, since the first websites I found were explanations of "All You Zombies," by the time I managed to locate the full-text I had a pretty good idea what was going on in the story. I was very intrigued by the idea of a temporal agent and the gender identity theme as I was immediately reminded of Jack Harkness. I'm pretty curious if the story was inspiration for the character, but I have no idea how I'd ever find that out! "By His Bootstraps" I am working through slowly. It was a lot easier to find online for some reason!

*shoots him a piercing look*

Yes, but I've always wondered if he might have been a time-traveler who'd gotten stranded somehow. It would explain how he 'invented' all those gadgets of his.

*gently reminds him*

But we don't, remember? For us, it would be like going to India for a lamb korma instead of going to the corner take-away.

*moves back out of the way of flailing hands*

I don't believe I've heard of him. *ponders* He says that if you're here you haven't been killed in the past? Is that it?

Hard to say. *he shrugs* It was obviously supposed to be some *makes quotes with his fingers* very deep Martian thingy. Or maybe he just liked the way it sounded. *grins*

I don't know. You might be the sort of person who gets his kicks going around being some sort of cosmic spoiler. I don't know you well at all. And with all of history to watch, I just thought movies might seem kind of tame to you.

*frowns*

That's right. One of those wizards. You make it sound like I've got the plague or something. Wizardry isn't contagious. *huffs a bit*

I thought the gender-switch was a brilliant touch.
Huh! I never even thought of that. It would be cool if it was!
Trying to find one of Heinlein's stories isn't quite as bad as finding one of Azimov's, but it comes close. I'll check my collections for you.
And I first read about LdV being a stranded time-traveler in Heinlein's Door Into Summer! :D

*arches an eyebrow*
Leonardo? A time traveler?
*shakes his head*
I don't think so. *reconsiders* Still, the alien who was coercing him to paint multiple copies of the Mona Lisa may have shared some future technology with him... *contemplates further* But I think it's kinda unlikely.

*grins, ducks his head slightly*
Alright. Point taken.

*nods, enthusiastic*
Yes! *thinks a moment* Well... basically. There are similar ideas to, like if you went back to kill your grandfather, some seemingly random event would happen to prevent you from doing so or something would cause you to change your mind.

*slowly* Grok... *smiling* It is rather fun to say, isn't it?

Well... *takes a deep breath, nods* I mean, think about it... If I wanted to spoil people, do you think I do it on a movie? I mean, I can see the whole of history! I could spoil them for the actual future, not some fictional tale from it.
*shrugs, offhandedly*
Anyway, movies are still fun. Granted, many of aren't as accurate as they'd like to think they are, but still... *nods* ...good theories for a culture so young. And they are good fun.

Oh, no! *shakes his head* No, I think the whole wizard thing is brilliant! But, I was just thinking, I... When I left here -- ten minutes ago here, two years for me -- being after the war I had some catching up of late-twentieth-century Earth literature to do and, um... *hesitantly* I think I've read something about you...

Yes, the gender-switch was a clever little touch!
Ooo, I think I missed something -- LdV?

*shrugs*

Just a thought I had. *raises an eyebrow* An alien? Made him paint copies of the Mona Lisa? Right. *tries to decide if he's being had on* I suppose it's possible. Have you ever considered writing a book? I know I'd buy it.

I can't imagine the chaos that would result if everyone had a time machine. The universe would collapse in a nanosecond.

*frowns*

That seems awfully chancy. Still, the universe is supposed to be random so I guess it works out?

Grok! Grok! Grok! *grins* I think it's because of the 'k'. Words with 'k' are SO much fun!

*looks at him shrewdly*

If you told people about history, they wouldn't believe you. They'd think you were some kind of lunatic. Whereas with a movie, they might lynch you if you went back to 1978 and told people Darth Vader was Luke's father. I know I would.

Accuracy tends to blunt the bottom line when it comes to movies. People want the facts sugar-coated. Or made up altogether. And please don't tell me we ever progress to the point where we don't have movies! That'd be awful!

*amazed, astonished and embarrassed*

About ME?!?! Rubbish! Who'd write about me?

Heinlein was SO good!
Sorry. :( Leonardo da Vinci.

Oh, no -- it's a good thought. Shows... *thinks a moment* ...shows you're thinking. Always good. Just, you know... Not accurate in this case.

A book?
*shrugs, off-handedly*
Yeah, but likely I'd have to argue with people about whether it should be classified as fiction or non-fiction. And that would be kind of irritating if no one believed me.

*blinks*
That would be bad, if everyone had a time machine. People would abuse that like you wouldn't believe.

*repeats*
Grok. Grok.
*laughs*
I dunno, the gr is pretty fun as well.

*smirks*
I'd never tell. *more serious* Better to be in the practice of not-telling.

*nods*
Well... In terms of movies. Movies are really just one method of storytelling, right? *calm, serious* Technology may change, but there will always be stories.

*nods, firmly*
J.K. Rowling.
*eyebrows raise, curiously*
Say, you don't happen to know a J.K. Rowling do you?

I am quite enjoying him!
OH! Leo! :-) Sorry! Silly me, I should have figured that out!

*dryly*

Thanks. I'd ask for proof, but I'm afraid of what you might show me.

*decisively*

Go with fiction. People read a lot more fiction than non and you'd sell more copies.

I know. *nods* Good thing we don't have them then, isn't it.

*can't help but grin as well*

It's an amazingly great word. Grok, grok grok! It was a great book too.

*gravely, but his eyes twinkle*

'It is better to remain silent and appear wise then to open your mouth and remove all doubt.'

*fervently*

Thank goodness!

*frowns, thinking*

I don't recall the name, no. But *he shrugs* I might not. *he taps his head* Had an accident.

Are you doing the novels or just the short stories right now?
S'all right! :D

*grins*

*considers a moment*
I hadn't even thought of it from a business perspective...
*nods, thinking*
Good idea.
*thinks further, scratching his scalp*
Of course... If someone did believe me, it might change everything...
*pauses in scratching*
Perhaps... Better not to do a book.

Yes.
*nods, quite serious, firmly*
Because otherwise I'd probably have to race around, patching up the universe all the time.

*smiles, more serious*
That's Heinlein for you -- great all around.

Ha... *laughs, eyes twinkling too*
Or, as I like to say -- being a space traveler and all -- since light travels faster than sound, you can appear bright until you speak.

*pauses, eyebrows raise*
An accident, you say? What...sort of accident?

IJ is back!! *clings*
I'm just reading the short stories that I can find online easily right now. See, the Doctor has me at quite a disadvantage... He's had 900 years to read all these wonderful things and converse with people about them. Meanwhile, I have a lot of catching up to even hope to come close to him!
